I have no idea about photography but one of my friend's has quite a posh camera - the type where each lens generally costs quite a lot of money!

Alas the lenses are out of my price range but while looking for inexpensive gift ideas I came across the suggestion of bokeh lenses.

I found this on ebay.

I find it hard to believe that anything at this price won't be a bit naff! I also can't see how these lenses would produce the effects in the examples seen on the page.

Can anyone advise me on if they are any good? And if theyre not, any gift ideas? I've already given albums and digital photoframes in the past so I am rapidly running out of ideas!

I think I'd rather scoop out my eyes with a spoon than look at images taken with those.
 
Actually they can be quite effective if you want that kind of bokeh, more for creativity than anything else. However, it's cheaper just to cut some black card and cut a shape out, I've done it myself with some interesting effects. I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand....
 
I'm not seeing what's creative about heart shaped OOF highlights in a photograph.
 
Make a set of them yourself? It'll have that whole home-made thing to them and it'll cost you a lot less than £20. Buy black card, buy a scalpel or X-acto knife and make simple shapes. You could print the shapes off onto the card or make a template using white paper and tracing the shapes. Don't worry about it being precise, you won't notice too many rough edges or flaws in the shape. I actually like them, unlike most on here.

^^ This would make a good present if they have a smartphone. You would buy the connector (2 parts) for their camera and smartphone, while they would download the free app. that controls the camera. The connector and wires are on Amazon between £25-28 delivered.
 
I can't stand any images created using these crappy shapes. As bad as using aged filters on instagram ... almost.
