Browser slows down

I have a Packard Bell desktop - 2.2GHz, 2GB - about 10 months old and it used to be OK.
Lately when running Internet Explorer or Firefox it starts off OK but after a while it gets slower when loading pages to the extent that pages that normally load almost instantaneously take 5 mins and still do not load.
Restarting the browser does not help, I have to restart the computer.
I have run Avast, AdAware, CCleaner & defrag, no change.
Any suggestions would be very welcome.

what sites are you using, and what add ons are running in internet explorer?
 
Have you tried clearing out all the temp internet files and cookies?
 
I rebuild my pc every 6-12 months. I install a lot of software over this period and find that a rebuild is the best way to inject life back into it.
 
to support above, what time of day are you using it have you checked your speeds some ISP are known to limit speeds if your a heavy user/downloader or are you surfing into broadband rush hour

I can be using just Talkphotography, the problem also occurs with Firefox so I am not sure if add ons will make a difference.

Yes, with diskcleaner & also CCleaner

I rebuild my pc every 6-12 months. I install a lot of software over this period and find that a rebuild is the best way to inject life back into it.
Not a lot of software installed & it was OK.

It happens at any time - about 10 mins ago in fact, I was only looking at Talkphotography.
 
Is it just the net that's slowing down or are all programs starting to lag?

It is just the browsers. Photoshop Elements, Open Office etc run Ok.
My laptop works OK connected to the same hub.
Puzzling?
 
My new laptop does that too... just the browsers.. they start of fine and after a short while get almost stopped. I have avast. Maybe we should disable that for a while and see?

I have Avast on my laptop and, so far, it is OK.
 
God bless Uni letting us all have SOPHOS for free :)

Had avast on my home PC for about a week, got rid of it as it wouldn't auto update and kept generating errors that forced me to reboot repeatidly before I could open up IE or Firefox
 
any chance of running a anti virus (updated) and some spyware, malware checker on that machine to make sure your clean
 
I would give the machine a good going over with the following

Add Remove Programs > Take out the crap you don't use. Trim down the software you do use (IE uninstall the unnecessary extras)
CCleaner
A good antivirus (updated)
Ad-Aware Free
HiJackthis (If you know what youre doing)

Then fully update both browsers, and reboot your router.

No change.
I also reset IE just in case and deleted Zonealarm 8, reinstalled Zonealarm 7 as this seems to be the difference between my laptop and desktop.
So far so good but early days yet.
