Looking at an image and description in Collins Complete British Insects, I think this may be Bombus terrestris, and possibly a queen.

Captured two days ago on a small patch of moss on the side of our tiny (stagnant, still awaiting reconstruction) pond. Captured hand-held with FZ330, Raynox 150 and KX800 twin flash. Batch processed with DXO Optics Pro and Silkypix Developer Pro, with image-specific adjustments in Lightroom. There are 1300 pixel high versions in this album at Flickr.

Not easy to get these looking right but the first and last shots are pretty much there for me. ;)

Nick, I find your work truly stunning. The details you manage to capture are amazing, keep it up.

Absolutely Superb Nick Super detail.:clap::clap::clap::clap: I have been chasing birds lately but after seeing these I think it's time to get out the macro gear(y)
