Buying a compact...

I've been looking at compacts for travel, street photography - other things where you might not want to lug a dslr kit about. In fact, I may be looking to replace my dslr - an old knee injury has reared its ugly head and I'm not sure carrying the extra weight while out hiking etc is doing it any good. I was in two minds about getting one in the first place tbh.


I would like to be able to get good printable images, perhaps some A3 size stuff to frame. I don't want to spend a fortune and was thinking about the Fuji x30. Would this fit the bill?

The X30 certainly is a lovely looking camera, and it does have a pretty good IQ ( decent sized sensor ) the price is pretty good at the moment. Certainly a lot lighter than a DSLR, but not a very pocketable compact, unless you have large pockets. I would have certainly bought one. But I am not going to, and that is down to my own personal reasons.

Members on here do use the X30, I am sure they will be along soon, and they will tell you all about it.

Coolpix A, Ricoh GR Spring to mind, although not for video. IQ and handling are terrific on both.
The new Fuji X70 looks like it'll be an excellent piece of kit and "modernises" the two previous recommendations.
Clearly all three have the "disadvantage" of being single focal length.
Ricoh GR is truly pocketable. The other two are compact.

And, of course, in the slightly bigger body stakes, the X100 (series) remain brilliant cameras. And with a VF.

All of these cameras are more expensive than the X30 but will provide better pictures (in more challenging conditions) given the difference in sensor size (APS-C vs 2/3").

My wife has an X30 and despite its small sensor takes lovely photos and has a good set of features and, importantly, a good VF and a zoom lens.
