Ive finally got some funds to buy a better camera.
At present i have a Canon 450, I wanted the 5d mkiii nbut think ill have to settle for the 5d mkii.
I mainly photograph Horses, so fast moving or portrait, or dogs, and general family, holiday landscapes etc.
Is Canon 5dmkii my best bet? Got £800 to spend

A used Nikon D610 shouldn't be overlooked in my opinion.
 
7d mark 2 from panamoz for £890 would be ideal for horses,dogs and kids.
 
The 5D Mkii isn't the fastest focusing camera. I'm sure someone else will give you more advice but I think you may be better looking at a 7D Mkii.
 
Isnt the 7d half frame?
Ive got a standard canon lens, Sigma 70-300, Canon 28-80, and a canon 50mm prime

No the 7D is crop frame the same as the 450 you have got now,the lens you have got will work fine on an FF camera if were to go that way,but you would lose some reach that those lens have now,due to the 1x4 crop factor of your currant camera :)
 
I'd suggest buying higher quality lenses first. The Canon 50mm is probably the best quality lens you have. Full frame will highlight poor quality glass more than your current crop camera does. What doesn't your current camera do that you want it to?
 
I just find in low light the picture quality is rubbish, blurry, unless the sun is out.
What lens do you suggest?

Depends what you want to use it for?

Portraits your 50mm should be ok.

For your horses you might need an f2.8 lens but will be very costly. What mode do you shoot in? I'd suggest you don't have a fast enough shutter speed maybe?

What is costly?
 
If it's canon full frame you really want to upgrade to & I would just for a cleaner image with higher ISO, the newer 6D is a better bet than a 5D Mkii.

There is a 70-200 F2.8 MKII for sale at £1100 in the classifieds on here, to give you an idea of price, the MKI version would obviously be cheaper now.

Another option could be the 70-200F4 (IS or non IS) - there is a non IS for early £300's in the classifieds...

One thing to remember, the F2.8 lenses are quit heavy, especially when compared to the F4 versions...

That should get you a 2nd hand 5D MKII easily, but you need to make sure your lenses will fit a full frame, or you'll need to budget for lenses as well.

Don't knock 5D mark 2, it focuses beautifully and I've never had any problems with its focusing. It is truly a workhorse camera. I find this forum tend to over estimate needs. It's like telling people they need a 300 bhp car for driving around town.

To be honest, £800 is enough for a secondhand 5D2 and a good lens. I just sold my 24-105 F4L IS for £330, I'm planning to sell my 5D2 for £500 to a friend of mine. Total ever so slightly over £800.

You could spend the £300 (after buying second hand 5D2) on a second hand 70-200 F4 lens, they go for around £300, the better image stabilized version go for £450.


Ooorrrrrr buy mirrorless cameras. They cost slightly less but perform just as well, and they are smaller, lighter thus more practical. I find my new Fujifilm X-E2 with 55-200mm great for the odd animal shots I do, it tracks not much worse than 5D2. Cost? £250 and the lens can be found for £300. DSLR is not required for 80% of camera buyers, but the dinosaur still prays on unsuspecting buyers.

Use the contact us (bottom right corner at the end of the page in the blue strip) and advise them, so you can access as there are some good buys and certainly worth a look at. Beware though, it could cost you lots of money :D

Which lens out of your 70-300 and 28-80 do you use more? Worth upgrading that together with your camera. The lens is more important than the camera.

Is it the image stabilized version of Sigma 70-300? Good replacements are Canon 70-200 F4 IS for £450 in classified (I'm selling my one /shameless plug) or Canon 70-300 USM IS (cheaper) or Canon 70-300 L (better build quality) are all excellent replacements.
28-80 is a very old kit lens, there are multiple versions, does it have USM markings? Good replacement is Canon 24-105 F4 L IS for £330 on this forum classified.

I use the Sigma 70-300 1;4-5.6 APO most, no image stabiliser
 
I ideally need a good lens to use indoors to, indoor school ( for horses ) and at home.
But my biggest use is horses, at competition etc, only as hobby but i like to try take the best pics possible
 
Don't overlook the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8. You will probably find the image quality more than acceptable and a cheaper option than the Canon. I used to shoot with one and a Sigma 120-400 at a lot of competitions when my daughter was younger, combined with a 40D (shows how long ago it was). The 7D mk2 would probably be your best choice but to save some cash to spend on a lens you could look for a 2nd hand mk1.

I'm not a canon shooter but as others have said a 70-200 2.8 is a great lens and I'm sure will benefit you more than a body some of my fave pics I've taken was in an old Nikon d70 and tamron 70-200
 
Hi Donna I just bought the Mark II from Panamoz this week, ordered it Monday evening, it was here on Thursday, I got the EM5 II and the pro 12-40 lens for 1089 UK sterling

Video on it is great as well as features, it's compact as well none of the FF lugging around, well unless you get a Sony then it's about the same weight, also cost of ownership is far cheaper than FF lens, been there done that I had Sony A7II and Nikon 800e both very good, but costly and the Nikon was just too flipping heavy.

They also do the Nikon d750 but a bit above your budget, however u can get the EM1 with pro lens again for 990. Canon would be fine and if your used it them then maybe, but I'm not a canon fan so I can't advise... The 5 axis on the emII is very good in fact it's the current best I think...
 
I'd go for a 7D or 7D2 over a 5D2 for what you're wanting, both have better focus systems.

If you want Full Frame try a 6D. But remember that your lenses will get 'shorter'.

"Blurry" images suggest poor technique rather than the camera, unless of course you're meaning noisy rather than blurry? As above if you've 'only' got £800 to spend you're going to struggle to get a FF set up unless you already have FF lenses.
 
For indoor horse events you need to best high ISO body you can afford (if you want to stay Canon, thats the 6d) and fast lenses! Indoor arenas are notoriously dark, especially in the winter and are very rarely properly lit.

I use the 6d with the 70-200 f/2.8 Sigma, and if I need more speed, my 50mm f1/8 and 85mm f/1.8.

7dmk2 is good, but at iso 3200 which is likely where you'd find youself, you'll be better of with full frame, either the 6d or 5d3.
 
I'd suggest posting some of your current photos with the exif intact ie shutter speed, iso etc. Then people can easier comment on why your photos are blurry and what equipment or settings might help
