Buying from Dell

Hi, hope you don't mind if I post this here. I tried "Shopping" but only got one reply.

I've more or less decided what I need. Dell seem to be the only company who do a genuinely "Small Form Factor" case, available from their "Optiplex" range. Inside it I want a pretty fast processor and a reasonable video card, but I DON'T want a Dell monitor.

After several calls to Dell, I have had conflicting advice. The most serious is whether I can get a system in a SFF case WITHOUT the monitor. Their website says no, for some reason. One of their advisors says I can, another says I can't.

Is Dell's website their bible? What I mean is, if I contact the right person, can I get a system WITHOUT a monitor which is only available WITH a monitor on the Dell site?

Any advice gratefully received.....!

Ah! Just looked at the Optiplex range and they're aimed at buisiness users where Shuttle is a more End User/Gaming pc.

Some of the Dells I looked at said the monitor wasn't included so I'm sure you'd be able to get one.

I just bought 2 dell studio laptops for my girls as xmas presents and one was faulty out of the box so it requires changing but you try getting in touch with dells customer service they are an absolute disgrace with thier indian call centres costing 10 per minute that put you on hold for 40 minutes (seriously).
I would now seriously consider the aftersales service when purchasing a new system and I wouldnt touch dell with a bargepole, funilly enough though ordering the laptops was smooth as silk...I hate dell now and when my girls boot up these laptops on christmas day my heart will be in my mouth, despite buying thier 3 year warranties I dont feel confident at all.

consider the aftersales when purchasing.

This has changed since last year and early this year when I bought (then had problems) with mine although I might have used the online chat option. I found their aftersales service excellent and again when I have a conflict with zone alarm or firefox (cannot remember which, one of the updates anyway) again I found them very helpful.

Dont want to hijack the thread but If it has changed for the better I dread to think what it was like before, I have been at my wits end with them and now my service tags show the wrong warranties and dates on thier website....I think I am just going to send them back under the distance selling regs because they are the pits..Dell:thumbsdown:, I am glad that someone has had good service from them.

I bought a Dell 3 years ago and had a nightmare with the call centre. I wanted XP pro not home. It was on the web site as an option, but it wouldn't let me select it. The call center almost made me decide not to buy, as all they can do is go by what the system lets them do.

Fortunately at the time I was working for a Multi National, who had a supply contract with Dell so we could get a bit of extra discount, so I rang the special number and got through to a very nice Canadian lady in Dublin. Complete change. Yes she had the same trouble with the web site. "No problem with XP Pro, I can override that."" How about a special offer on extended warranty" " Would you like me to put a Christmas rush on that for you"? Totally different.

After sales service is contracted out, ( like most companies nowadays ) but they do try to help.

Tried to contact her when I wanted to upgrade my laptop, but she's gone back to Canada. Couldn't be bothered with all the call center hassle again so bought a Mac.

I'm just having another look at one of the shuttle systems, assembled by icubes. The more I look the more I'm tempted....

Thanks for the suggestion.
