Calling a GF2 owner!

Am I stupid? Probably, but I'd like to check anyway...

I was having a play with a GF2 in a shop today to see if I could get on with it. In particular, I wanted to have a fiddle with the QMenu/Fn button, and test out using it as a DoF preview.

I set the camera to Av mode, then went into the settings and changed the QMenu option to Fn, then selected 'preview' (I think that's what it called - it had an icon of a lens iris).

Exited out of the menu, I composed a shot and then pressed the Fn button. The camera says something along the lines of "simulating shutter speed". Eh?

Wouldn't you expect it to be DoF preview in Av mode? And how should I have changed it to DoF? The girl in the shop couldn't help me (she did admit she was new and in training so I can't blame her too much). I fiddled for about 5 minutes before I had to give up so the staff could go home.

Am I stupid, or are the settings really confusing and obtuse?

Well I only got my GF2 this morning and have only played with it for half an hour or so, so I might not be the best one to answer this but... I just tried setting the Fn button to preview and got the "simulating shutter speed" message when shooting in Av. It says that but the image on the screen does seem to be previewing the DoF. So I reckon it works how you think it should but the wording is a bit odd.

I have a G1. G2 and GF1 and I believe it to be same in this respect as GF2.
You are quite right when in preview mode both in Aperture or shutter mode the message always states "shutter speed effect on DISPLAY", What this actually means is that you are in DOF mode and you need to press the DISPLAY button to turn on shutter speed preview.

To preview DOF you press the little iris/dustbin icon once when in preview mode, and then to continue to preview shutter speed you press the display button.

I can't see any reason why you would need to allocate this to the function button as it operates easily as above. I find it very hard to actually see the DOF due to the screen being small. It's probably easier to take a quick shot and then enlarge it in playback mode to see whether it's right.

And no you're not stupid, I'm a "manualolich" :bonk: and it took me a lot of pondering to work out what it actually meant in the manual.
 
The gf2 doesn't have the iris/bin button, hence the need to assign it to fn.
 
Thanks for your help guys. It didn't seem to be doing DoF preview (when I took a photo the background was OOF but it was sharp in preview mode) so I probably needed to press Display to toggle onto DoF mode.

I didn't know that - good point. Personally I can't see any difference from what is in Live Preview when I half press the shutter button to what appears when I use the DOF function. Maybe i JUST NEED TO GET MY EYES TESTED.:thinking::D
 
The goodness is that the GF2 isn't fundamentally flawed so can stay on my list :)
