Yes
As a newcomer to the photography scene i was thinking of joining a local Camera club, however a guy who i work with (keen tog) has but me off a little saying that they are very clicky and camera snobbery is rife. He informs me that as a newcomer i would struggle to mix with the majority of the club members as i would be seen as a person with little to offer. As i live in the Wakefield area i was looking at either Wakefield or Normanton clubs.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Impossible for anyone to know from one town to another.. its the poeple that make the club and so depends what those people are like... I went to mine for quite a while.. learnt a lot and met some decent people... all only too happy to help.. they even had a meet'n'greet person on the committee whos job it was to make any newcomers welcome.. introduce them round and show them what its all about..

quite the opposite of your mates description..

i only stopped going because i kept nodding off during the slideshows :)

Some are, some arnt. On the day any body you meet can be in a mood for lots of reasons. Either trust your mates advise or just try some and find out for your self! After all its how YOU mix with people that matters, not your mate. And you'll only send a few hours of your life doing something. If you don't like it, don't go again! SIMPLES:bonk:

I too used to fall asleep during the slide shows, but it was the snoring that really upset them!

no, I don't think they are worth while unless you are over 50 and have a beard.

I know where you are coming from. I went to a club evening at what is considered the best in my area.
several couldn't seem to even say hello, if only to be polite.
when talking to the ones that were friendly, it turned out that the "manual mode" was considered obsolete, "we use av/tv" was what i was told!!!
So, for now I'm just reading and playing with all the settings.

What do you want to get out of it?

I went along to my local club last year, it did prove useful to see different styles etc but being half the age of most of the members I didn't really fit in that well.

My aim would be to gain a better understanding of photography and what styles are out there. More importantly for me is for my own development and learning. I really enjoy meeting people and thought it would be a way of meeting like minded people who have a greater understanding than me, and thus allowing me to learn from them.
I really enjoy TP for all the help and advice, but i thought a CC would give me the same but face to face.

Steve,

I joined another club local to the two you mentioned and to be honest I thought they were quite a friendly bunch...I wasn't able to make all the meetings as I was busy with work.

Normaton held a competition presentation night not so long ago and they invited the club I joined to attend as a good will gesture I think.....However, the standard of photography was amazing...Can't really comment on how friendly or stuffy they were but if they are preared to help you, I dont think you could go too wrong with Normanton.

I do not know the Wakefield club.

+1 though I was the same age as a lot of them and still didn't fit in :)

Question: what can a club give you that you can't get here at TP in spades? I see TP as a worldwide club of photographers without any need for a president and monthly meetings. Rather...you get help, advice, critiques and swap-meets 24/7. Perfect!
