It was found by a collegue of mine on Saturday 30th May. There are only two pictures on the memory card.
If you’ve lost it please PM me with the make, model and colour of the camera, and give me a rough idea of when the shots were taken and what they are. And we’ll get it back to you.

Mods: if you think this is more likely to be seen by more people in a different forum, please would you move it?

Cheers

bump
Just on the off chance that it's a forum member. Probably unlikely, but it's worth a try for a couple of days or so.

Nikon D3X, Black,Nikon 200-400mm VR, cat and a rabbit, am I close :D

Last bump before I let it die.
I guess whoever lost it isn't a forum member. It was a long shot... but you've got to try.
I'd hate to lose any of my kit and think that no-one cared enough to even try and find the owner.

Yeah, I think if it was a forum member, they might even have posted that they'd lost it.

I think it's very commendable that you tried though Bill.

Put classified ads up in the local area, though the odds are it is probably a visitor to the area. The owner might get a little funny about you going through their pictures though. What if there was amateur home made porn on there? Or self-shots of him oiling his beast in the mirror  If someone found my camera I do not think I would like it if someone had been nosing through my pictures. Not that I have anything to hide, it just seems rude.

By the way, is it a DSLR? Poor sod losing all that kit. I would be gutted!

If it's a canon the check the exif data on a photo from it, they MAY have but their name in the owner field ( I know I have)

Good idea, it's on mine too.
I'm deliberately not saying what make or model it is because I don't want to compromise the issue. The genuine owner will certainly know this, and as there are only two shots on the card surely must remember pretty much what they were.

However... no info as to the owner on the exif I'm afraid :'(

Check the seriel number with the manufacturer, there's a chance it may have been registered in one of the professional schemes or for warrenty purposes.

how do you register your name on a camera thats a dammed good idea I think I will, I have a 50d - and have never been to grasmere and my camera is in its bag next to me - so im not claiming it :P

Well certainly with Canon it's done with the software supplied when you get the camera. I know with the 1DIIN I had to use a firewire connection. I can't remember if it was usb with the mark III? To be honest it's the kind of thing you do once and then tend to forget about. I'm sure someone will have better info than me on this one :)

ummm...hand it in so the owner can find it....

To who?
My collegue who found it doesn't particularly trust the Police to just keep it for 6 months for someone to claim it. And to be fair, with dodgy bankers and corrupt politicians surrounding us I have a certain amount of sympathy with his viewpoint. But I did suggest it when he first came to me to check out the card. But it's not my call I'm afraid.

to the local police...if you've lost something, wouldn't it be your first port of call? confused why you would take it upon yourself to find the owner when there's a much more efficient way.

see my answer above, but also...

a) I didn't find it.

b) I did suggest going to the police with it.

c) It's not in my posession.

I can't see what more I can do

tell the person who found it to take it so the local police so the owner can find it...no idea why there is a discussion about it

Just which bit of my answers in posts 20 & 22 don't you understand?
You're right about one thing though... I don't wish to discuss it with you any further.

forgot, everyone is corrupt, you're right, post on the internet to find the owner...good luck

Walls... If I'd have found it I'd have handed it in to the police, end of story.

But I didn't, and I'm trying to help in the best way I can. And no, I don't think everyone is corrupt, but there is certainly evidence of enough corruption in our society that it should worry all of us. But you're making me feel that it would have been better not to have even started the thread in the first place.

not hard, tell your friend to hand it in...I certainly wouldn't look for a camera i had lost on the internet. Someone is probably a bit upset they've lost a not unsubstantial bit of kit and their first reaction would be to call the local bizzies...perhaps I'm old school. I admire your confidence though.

Tell your friend to contact the nearest police station to where he found the camera, give them the make, model number & serial number of the camera and tell them he will hold on to the camera if he doesn't trust the police. They will be happy for him to do this as they will have 1000's of other bits of lost or stolen items and will be glad not to have another thing to store. They can then check their records and see if anyone has reported the loss. They will then contact him if/when somebody does. He still has the description of the images on the card as a final check if he doesn't trust that the loser is genuine. If nobody claims the camera within 6 weeks of reporting it to the police then ownership of the camera transfers to him and he can do what he likes with it.
There is a criminal offence of 'theft by finding' whereby someone finds something and assumes ownership of it without taking reasonable steps to locate the owner. Posting on a forum read by a very small percentage of camera owners wouldn't be seen as reasonable steps, whereas reporting it to the police is. So the right thing to do regardless of his distrust of the police is to report it to them.

^^

I was just about to post the same thing Nick.

Inform your friend that NOT handing it in to the police is a criminal offence in itself. I've found 2 mobile phones, handed them in and a couple of weeks later had thank you calls off the owners, The police do their job, and they do it well despite the few bad apples they may get!

Bill, the best thing to do in this situation is tell me the info on the camera and I'll claim it, bang it on Ebay and split the proceeds.

All joking aside, if I lost my camera, I would be posting on all the forums I could find.

With regards to the police - if you have the camera details and haven't heard after the required period, you could contact them and ask for it (presumably you also would have paperwork).

That does seem the most likely way to find the owner. Having said that, if you owner came forward after the six weeks and asked for it back, it would be very awkward.

Good luck.
Graham

See my post No 15.

Good point NorthernNikon and I'll certainly look into it. I always register my kit (usually online as it's easier). So hopefully the original owner is the same and they'll have a contact address.

And for all the posters telling me to take it to the police, I AGREE. I would have done.

Stealing by finding is the term used and it is an offence. If it is handed in by your friend and not claimed within I believe six months it will be rightfully his. I know what I would do.

well if it's expensive, then the serial number might be registered with the manufacturer

also I would save the pics, then do a data recovery on the card.nosey yes..but might give you a clue as to who the camera belongs to
