Camera remote cable vs ir?

I'm looking for a remote for my camera. This week I've brought a grip,2 lenses and am now feeling poor.

So what would you recomend? Are the third party remotes as good as the canon ones? Thanks
 
I cannot stand the IR remotes every time I've seen one used on meets I've organised they've been nothing but a complete PITA if you need just a basic on/off trigger pick up one of the cheap >£5 jobs, if your looking for more features there are plenty of options from 3rd party suppliers some of which are very good :)

Why has it been a pain?
 
Not working...it's as simple as that, a incredibly high percentage of what I do is done in the dark often I might not be able to use a torch so don't want to faffing around, I need my triggers to just work and do what is expected of them...and in my experience IR triggers tend to be un reliable and not function as expected simple as that

Most of the time I use simple on/off wired triggers...
For the times when I need it I have a much more expensive wireless trigger for when maybe the camera needs to be set up somewhere I don't want to be for the duration of the shot ;) that is a (Hannel GigaT Pro 2) I also use this for the occasional star trail or time lapse
 
Another vote for cabled remotes. I've had a couple of IR ones, never been impressed, neither has worked as well as a cable. Also the cheapo ebay remotes worked well for a bit before dying, the genuine Canon one is much better. I've got an intervalometer I bought at Focus last year I use for night stuff as in bulb it has an illuminated timer, ideal for long exposures.
 
I prefer a cable remote - you can stand anywhere to shoot - IR needs to be in line of sight of the sensor. I've also found them to be more reliable then IR remote.

The limiting factor with a cable remote can be the length of the cable, but you can get extension cables for them...
 
Thanks for the advice. I shall have a look for one which uses a cable then.
