Anyone use carbiners or similar to attach straps to camera? I'm after something that will allow me to remove/attach the strap quickly yet be secure.
 
Look at the q-strap (search on here). It uses a caribeaner and a hefty d-loop, but is very quick to use. Love mine.

I bought the BlackRapid RS-7, pricey, but, works perfectly.
 
+1 for the BlackRapid and also a plug for the Op-Tech which uses quick release clips.
 
+1 for the Q strap. A fraction of the price of Black Rapid, and essentially the same thing. If anyone gives you the horror example (and they will... my god they will) of trusting your expensive camera with a relatively inexpensive strap (because we all know expensive is better) ask for an example of an actual failure. :D

I did, before I bought mine... Found nothing recent, first hand or credible. I find it to be very well made, and trust it implicitly.

Yeah, I was like that with my Optech clone, right up to the moment it failed and sent
my camera heading for the terra firma.

It's personal preference though, if I've got the guts of three grand and upwards of camera a lens hanging off my camera strap I'd rather be 100% happy.

The smug feeling of having saved ten quid or whatever soon disappears when you're picking your camera up off the ground...
 
But again, that's not a first hand catastrophic failure of a Q-strap is it... It's just the general horror story that always comes out in these threads. But agreed, you pays you money and takes you choice.

Yeah, but ultimately even if it had been you'd have replied with "that's just one example" or if 10 people reported a failure "that's just a fraction of the straps sold", ultimately if you're happy then fine, but, like the bride that picks a tog because they'll do a wedding for £200, you can't come back moaning if it all goes pear-shaped ;)
 
The argument over the black rapid and the q strap splits many on here, any strap is going to have some failures and it's ultimately down to you which you trust. I've got a rs7 mainly due to the perceived better quality of the product but also due to the q strap being such a blatant copy (look at the design and their logo compared to black rapid, it's a court case waiting to happen). I'm happier feeling I trust the rs7 more ,although I always have one hand gently holding it just in case.
 
Just to add to the thoughts, I use a double rapid strap for two body/lens combos and while you can use each strap individually, they are cumbersome for me so I recently started using something else. I have a shoulder strap from a fairly expensive [when new] piece of luggage. The strap attaches with the carabinier style clips, the sort you have to slide backwards and the then press in, and they are pretty good quality too, its takes some effort to actually slide then press [as in, unlikely to release accidently] I only used this when using one camera, just for short shoots outdoors or the hobby stuff [so not in the middle of a wedding] and it attaches to the normal hooks on each side of the body and of course, can be removed quickly and easily [unlike a normal neck strap]. It also has a whopping great shoulder pad so is comfortable to carry either over shoulder or diagonally across the body.


So, here is my question, are any of the strap makers doing anything similar? A neck strap [so the camera is carried upright] but with proper quick release but secure clip fasteners? yes I know some of the optech type straps have the removable bit and you can clip the 2 ends together to make a very short strap, but I want a fully removable one. :shrug:
 
I don't want a strap, I've got one that suits me OK. I'm just after something I can attach to the end of the strap that will then quickly attach to the D ring on the camera. I want to avoid having to take the end of the strap through the camera D ring and then fastening as normal.

Yvonne, I haven't seen one, but couldn't you maybe just add something like the "S clips" at 4m10s in this video to pretty much any neck strap available?

Edit: David, is the S-clip I mentioned something like what you've got in mind?

Yes Sam that's the sort of thing I want, or at least something that does the same job. I need to be reassured of its safety though before I hang my D700 off it.
I'm not interested in the merits of Q, R or any other sort of strap:shrug: Can we please stay on topic?

Yeah, you need to look for a suitable carabiner, s-biner, snaphook or clip that has some sort of tested tolerance.

Depending on how quick you want to remove the camera, maillons are cheap and stronger than carabiners et al.

They're built for climbing and so have very good tolerances.

Yes so basically, what I have with the luggage strap, but just the clip part.

I use 'McGizmo' clips with my binocular strap. I used to use them on my camera but I use a (TP) Optech strap now. I did find with the McGizmo clips that if you clip them to a solid ring (instead of a cord loop like in the photo below), then they can slip off when a twisting movement occurs.

A quick release gun sling swivel might be worth looking into if you wan't to make your own solution?

Black Rapid RS-4 here, never had a problem with the carabiner it comes with. I've wrapped the 'biner and the metal clasps in black electrical tape to stop them scratching the camera body, works nicely.
