Hi, Its been a while.

Ill cut straight to the point. Got a 350D with 18-55mm lens and battery grip + 3 batteries. Remote camera switch. All boxed etc.

Ive been wanting to get a camcorder as I want to get back into shooting shorts, but then realised if I upgraded my camera to a DSLR with that capacity I would be killing 2 birds with 1 stone so to speak.

Ive already got a 580 EXII, nifty fifty and EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM Lens so set for lenses.

What would be a good camera to go to? Budget wise, I want to sell my 350d for 150-200 so that would be knocked off the price and then aiming for about paying another 500ish on top, but would like a battery grip with the new camera too.

Any advice?

would that be based on my budget?

sorry for my ignorance, havent looked at cameras for ages now, would the 550D be a better option to go down?

for the same reason I didn't suggest a 7D, 5D Mark II or 1D Mark 4 - your budget doesn't permit.

Canon 500D body only - £ 507.99
Grip for above - £ 119.00
Total = £ 628 less whatever you get by selling 350D

Canon 550D body only - £ 629
Grip for above - £ 160
Total = £ 789

If you could get £ 289 for a 350D body only, then go for the 550D otherwise you have to flex your budget a bit.

Although I suggest you play with a HD enabled dslr to see if it suits you and compare against the facilities a HD camcorder would give and see if you can live with the shortcomings.

You will also have to replace any CF cards you have with SD cards.

thanks for the thorough reply, very much appreciated.

Cant get my hands on a DSLR with Movie Mode so cant have a play. From what I have seen on the internet with regards to shot footage it meets my requirements as I will be doing static shots for about 95% of my shoots. I cant think of anything else where it wouldnt meet my requirements (other than not allowing an external mic to be used).

No idea what I would get for a 350D with battery grip!

Thanks for the replies everyone.

the 550D is what I am going to aim for, and keep the 500 in mind if I cant stretch my budget.

Does anyone have a rough idea what I should expect to get for a 350D with Grip and 3 batteries (1 official, 2 3rd party)? (all boxed).
