Hi All

It's me b'day today, and I want to treat myself to a new external 1TB drive. Can you let me have your recommendations please for a reasonably priced unit, preferably firewire 400, but USB2 will be fine too.

I have seen several people make reference to £50 units... and I haven't seen any at that price so would appreciate some guidance please.

Thanks.

Crikey, they've come down a bit.. I bought a Maxtor Basics 1tb USB drive last year. Not a lot to say really, does what it says on the tin

i would always go with western digital.

I have a 500gb MyBook and never had a problem with it. Im about to get a new internal drive soon and will be going for Western Digital again!

oh, and happy birthday :D

Happy Birthday.

I have a WD 500 but my last purchase was a Buffalo 1Tb USB2, I think they are even cheaper now than I paid, so around £65.

Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes and suggestions here, much appreciated.

Thanks Hacker - that looks a super one, especially at 7200rpm.

I have a WD Mybook 1TB network drive. Not bad at all; fast, reliable and easy to set up. Plenty of terrible reviews, but mostly by people who expected the wrong things from a network drive [or just go about making things complicated for themselves. I mean, if you've never heard of DHCP, why go messing with those settings? I love how plenty of folks head straight to the 'advanced' tab even though they've no idea about networking...] ...

Anyway, My Macbook Pro now has 100GB less of photos and audio files on it, and runs like a nuclear powerplant as a result...

Another vote for the Western Digital 1TB "My Book" here .

I've had mine for about 6 months and it's very quiet and easy to use. Transfer speeds seem to be more limited by my laptop than the drive, as it runs just as fast with this drive as with much smaller USB storage devices.

I'm using it with Windows Vista (FWIW) and followed the advice that I read about re-formatting it to NTFS (it comes in FAT32 format), so that it could better 'comminicate' with my laptop's HDD.

Of course, it's easy to place too much trust in these devices and not back things up from them regularly enough, but if you take precations to avoid this pitfall, I reckon that it is a great investment  ...
