Can I brighten a layer in Ps

Still playing around with the bonsai shots and backgrounds. I have the bonsai on a separate layer in the attached photo but I would like the tree to be a bit brighter. Is there any way I can brighten just the tree? What ever I've tried seems to brighten the whole photo.

As always, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Right click on said layer, then convert to smart object and you have full editing etc

Or you can create a "clipping" mask where you clip an adjustment layer to another layer. E.g. create a brightness or curves adjustment layer and clip it to the layer you want to adjust and it will only affect that layer
