Hmm, not sure how this is a staircase. Either it's an optical illusion or I am not looking at it right As a result, I can't really give in constructive critique. Sorry, but I'll check in later.

Aha! It all becomes clear now. I think I would crop the top bit to get rid of the light in order to focus the attention more solidly on the top circle of light. It would also create a more balanced picture.

I always (except for panoramas) keep the 2/3 ratio- most of the time I keep the original framing (with only some perspective corrections). I've done my best to follow your instructions without derogating to this rule.
