As a first time buyer of a DSLR and a very amateur photographer, willing to have more control over my images than a point and shoot, I researched some entry level DSLR's.

I was impressed with Canon's 1000D/Rebel XS as a good starter but noticed it was released in 2008. My worry is that after buying this camera, Canon will release a new entry level SLR with better specs. (such as video shooting, which the 1000D doesn't have but all their newer mid range level cameras do)

Can anyone help me? Should I wait until Canon do eventually release a follow up or should I bite the bullet and spend a fair amount of money on a camera that might be a dinosaur in 5years time?

I think the 550D is a bit steeply priced. I understand photography isn't cheap but I want to remain at beginner and entry level. Thank you for the response and advice though. :)

1000d is a good little camera
About £350 with std kit lens, say you keep it for 4 years flog it for £50 after this time
stands you about £1.50 a week
say canon replace in 18months sell it for £150
stands you about £2.70
a bit basic i know but, guessing on resale values, you get a lot out of it for £1.50 to £2.70 a week depreciation
As i said its a good little camera,as for the video mode, doesn't appeal to me, you'll have to pay if you want that in a stills camera

There's always something better around the corner.

If you want a cheap way to start, whilst waiting to see which way the wind blows on how well you enjoy photography then buy a used EOS 20D. This should be about £150, and spend another £100 on a lens (definitely get an 18-55 IS for less than that). If canon come out with something new that you desperately want when you've found you are enjoying photography then sell the 20D for £120 or more - it's almost depreciation proof at this point in time.

My partner has a 1000D. The image quality it produces is very nice straight out of the camera. However, I immediately found it very frustrating when I tried using it because it has virtually no buffer for RAW files and shooting rates are very low (even compared to my 5D, which is no speed demon).
