canon 1100d

Just getting in to photography and purchased a canon 1100d to start me off,anyone got any tips or advice on this camera.I will mainly be taking photos of football games so i no i need to buy another lens for this.There is a setting for sport,am i best to use this or enter my own settings

I would recommend the 55-250 EFS lens for sport if you are on a budget (It's around £140) and will help you get close to the action. You'll need to make sure that the light is good, as for a fast enough shutter speed to stop the action, I struggle a bit in autumn, from around 3pm onwards.

More expensive options are available, but for a beginner, you can get some good results with that.

You'll need a longer lens than the kit 18-55 for football. As suggested above, the Canon 55-250IS (mk I or II) is a great lens for the price and certainly worth a look. It'll fit nicely with your 18-55 lens and allow you to have fun with your new camera.

The Canon 70-300 IS (not L) is another great lens to look at, but is more expensive - do you have a budget ?

As you progress and find out more specific needs, there are lots of available options to choose from.

If you are very new to photography, then the sport setting (and other "basic zones") is a great place to start to learn what the camera is doing for the type of shooting you are doing. Then look at the pictures, look at the settings the camera has chosen and you can then progress by using the "advanced zones" (Av, Tv, M) and using your own settings, based on the "basic zone" settings the camera had chosen previously. You can then start to adjust these for the desired effect you want...

Thanks for the advice,i've been searching for the 70-300 lens all week but you both say the 55-250 EFS is better for sports,whats the difference between the two

No didn't say the 55-250IS is better, the 70-300IS is better and a more substantial build, but is more expensive and without knowing your budget it's difficult to recommend the best lens.

If you can afford it, then I would get the 70-300 IS over the 55-250 IS.

Budget depending, you could look at the Canon 300 F4 L and some of the Sigma long zooms are worth a look at aswell.
