Canon 16-35mm & 24-70mm

Morning,

Have finally decided to switch to 5D mkiii and am looking at lens now.

Is it worth getting these 2 lens (mainly shoot landscape and scenery) due to overlap? Am i better saving money and going for something different?

If so what.....

Unfortunately there are no alternative Canon ultra wide angle lenses. You could consider Sigma 12-24mm or Tokina 16-28, but neither are as sharp as the 16-35mm by Canon.

To hell with gear heads talking about over lap is what I'd say. If those 2 lenses do what you want them to do, then put them into your bag.

My usual bag contents are 24-105 f4L, 17-40 f4L and 35 f2. There's major overlap at 35mm but if I can get the shot, then why not?

Tokina 16-28 is far sharper than 16-35mm, but you don't get filter thread with the former. 16-35mm is really not great, probably due to terrible quality control :thumbsdown:
The alternative is Zeiss 21mm or TSE

24-70mm is a decent lens. I have somehow got a fairly good copy and that gets used where possible.

ah right, thanks for the clarification. Doesn't seem to be a lot of those lenses about.

I like overlap, saves a lot of lens changing on walkabout.

Ignore the 18, I had a similar trilemma and after much research found the 18 came in 3rd place for choice. The 21 is tops if you want prime, the 16-35 is the choice if you want zoom, despite Tomas' understandable reservations.

To the OP, I have both the 16-35 and 24-70 (albeit Nikon) and they serve me well. I'll use the 16-35 up to 28mm, and the 24-70 from 28 onwards (its the perfect overlap as the omitted focal lengths are their respective weaknesses). I find the 24-70 does most of what I want.

OP is obviously looking into Canon glass, so they can behave slightly differently. The 16-35mm II L is a weird lens, you really need to try one before paying the money for it. I couldn't get a good well-centered copy when I was (still am) desperate for it, but they are also quite soft at the longer end, which beats the purpose of the zoom.
 
If you are going for landscapes and scenery you will be stopped down anyway and probably tripod mounted a lot of the time so do you need f2.8?
Look at the 24-105,17-40 and if you have the budget 24 or 17mm TS-E
