Canon 17-85 mm stuck? Try this

My 17-85 mm had got jammed at 17mm. Apparently it's a common fault due to a screw inside working lose. A quick Google search came up with this. Not for the faint hearted, but now, thankfully my lens is fixed.

This happened to me. Luckily it was still under warranty so I didn't have to scare myself half to death trying to fix it. Then, a year ago, it suffered some other 'common fault' and is still unusable. I hope yours has a very long life
