canon 18-200

Anyone one have any experience of this lens?
I have a 40D & 18-55is (kit) lens , I'm reasonablly happy with the IQ of it & just wondered if I can expect similar / higher / less quality from the 18-200?

I would love a 24-105 L but I would have to save for a while & I'm not sure is maximise the benefits of it & the build quality won't be a big issue as I'm no pro & would prob not want to print bigger than A3

I'm also getting the 50 1.8 to compliment this possibly

I have no experience of this lens, but there is a great difference between the 18-200mm and the 24-105mm. What do you shoot?

I was in a similar situation to yourself, i had a 17-85 which i loved and a 90-300, this was my holiday kit. At home i used the 17-85 and a soggy 100-300 f4. The soggy is too heavy to take on holiday to it stayed at home.

For years i used this dual combo, and found it to be great, but you will miss some shots, and when you are in places such as Turkey where the occasional gust of wind will fill your camera full of dust just as you are about to change a lens i wanted to investigate an all in one solution.

I ended up going for the Canon based on a few things. There are a number of reviews out there for other brands including the Sigma 18-250 and the Tamron 18-270 but when i went and tried both of these lenses out they just lacked in clarity when viewed on the laptop. I went to a local shop to try them both out and found that the sigma was better than the Tamron over all but i still wasn't 100% with the shots (They were very soft in the corner). Much to my disappointment the camera shop did order two other lenses in for me to try but these had their own shortfalls.

I purchased the Canon from this forum second hand but in new condition. The lens itself is great with the IS really coming in handy. Widest aperture is F3.5 which is good enough for me. The range is fantastic for a walk about lens, although i will admit it does lack clarity in some low light situations but then again that may be more to do with my Camera.

I was also debating whether to get a Canon 24-105 L but i don't think that i will see much benefit over the 18-200. Yes the clarity will be better and colours may be brighter, but i will have a limited range and i will lose out on the wide end, not to mention the L is about £250 more expensive than the 18-200!
