Canon 1D Mark iii users - advice needed

Gents,

I have the oppertunity to upgrade to the above body, but i am not sure on a few things.

I am currently torn between a brand new 7D or a 2nd hand 1D miii, i will mainly be using the body for sports (motorcycle racing)

Now I know that the 7D is 18mp while the 1D is only 10mp, am i going to notice the differance here ? will mostly be shooting jpeg !

I am upgrading from a 550D, is the jump to the 1D miii to big, would i be better of going for a 7D ?

The lenes being used will be the 100-400mm L

I know that the 1D will see me through a lot longer once i have got to grips with it but would i be making a too bigger jump ?

I am also aware that my current ef-s lenes will become redundent

I faced the same dilemma 18 months ago, and went for the 1D option :)

1D advantages
Superb AI-servo auto focus (I have an early model serial number camera which had the fixes performed by Canon and I've never had any problems).
Rugged build quality and weatherproofing (note your 100-400 isn't weather sealed!)
built in grip
10 fps, useful for the rare occasion when something interesting happens nearby ;)
dual card slots, I've got mine set-up to overlow onto the SD card when the CF card gets filled. Never need to worry about monitring how many shots you have left during a race.
Battery life is immense. I've shot almost 3000 shots on a single charge and have never needed a spare battery.
centre focus point ability at f8 (e.g. f5.6 lens with 1.4x convertor)
high ISO performance. Can shoot in pit garages at ISO 2000 without flash, and lightroom easily deals with what noise there is.
doesn't fill memory cards as quickly as the 7D. 10MP is fine for printing up to A2 or larger - how often will you print any bigger than this?

7D advantages
1.6 crop gives you extra reach
18mp gives you more opportunity for cropping (motor cycles are small than cars)
rear screen is much clearer and sharper
a bit lighter to carry around all day, though not much difference if a grip is fitted.
built in flash
a bit more discreet
can use you EF-S lenses

At the time I had an ancient PC, and buying the 7D would have meant an immediate upgrade to deal with RAW/jpg files nearly twice the size, as well as an investment in more memory cards.

Ignore the megapixels - the larger pixels and larger sensor (1.3 v 1.6 crop), plus lightning autofocus, big viewfinder, speed, build quality, additonal functions etc makes the 1DIII the better bet.
 
I'm about to change my 1D2 and was swithering between a 1D3 or 7D

I think I'm going to go for the 1D3 though.
 
When I was with Canon I went from a 5D to 7D for sports, though for some reason I wasn't fully happy with the images I was getting from it so I sold it and went for the 1DmkIII and what can I say it was a beast of a camera and one I liked so much I bought another.

The build quality is superb and the AF is fantastic just look for one with the later serial number and you won't go wrong. :thumbs:
 
Well I took the leap and brought Ian's 1dmiii, very pleased with it !!!!

Can someone now show me how to use it :(

Spent all day playing, boy it's a toy and a half with oh so many features and settings, I am lost !!!!

youll get used to it..;) just takes abit of getting used to! what you stuck with?
 
For sports where you can more or less fill the frame the 1DIII will be better.
It's only when you have to crop a lot i.e. for birds that the 7D is superior for image definition due to the higher pixel count.
Under certain circumstances this 7D advantage can be somewhat nullified by the better high ISO performance of the 1DIII.

Did you get the manual with it? Read it, it's got everything
 
google eos1dmk3_af_cfn_guide well worth a look, and gives a good starting point to fine tuning your af setting
 
I have a 7d and think its a great camera, will hopefully be getting a 1d3 in the new year and will keep the 7d as a back up.

got a grip on the 7d and battery life is crazy good, used all day shot over 2000 pics and only used about 25% of one of the batteries.
 
Bit of an old thread but here’s my two-penny worth. I owned the 7d after upgrading from 50d. Boy did I (and still do) miss the 50d. I recently chopped my 7d in to MPB and bought a 1d mark iii after borrowing one for a bank hol weekend. What a camera! The customization is mind blowing and you will get used to it, and the feel of handling is second to none. I to was worried about MP (18 vs 10) but as others have said, unless you plan to print large or crop heavy then this in my opinion won’t matter to much. That’s not to say the 7d is no good; it is an awesome camera, but like I said the feel and handling of a camera speak volume. You won’t regret it! The more you use it the more comfortable you will become with it. Happy snapping!!!
