Canon 1D Mk III question

When I push the joystick in on my 5D2 the camera settings come up on the screen and I can use the joystick to move around and select an item to change.

On both my 40D and my newly aquired 1D mk 3 if I push the joystick in nowt happens.

Is it supposed to do the same as my 5D2 and if so how the heck do I make it work.

If it doesn't then no probs I just don't want to spend another 2 hours trying to find out the answer searching the web.

The ability to move around the multi-controller or joystick as you call it is unique to the 5D2 and not the 1D3.

There, you can rest easy tonight now

I just noticed your gear list and up until recently I had the same combination of 1D3 and 5D2 - a very nice pair indeed.

Just recently found me mojo and started to get really interested again. Going to Manchester airport tommorow to blast a few shots of on the 1D.

Cost me more than it should but hey it's a full refurb, is minty nad has a Canon warrenty.

Looking round I paid over the odds but I'm a happy chappy so it doesn't realy matter.

I think the function was first introduced with the 50D, where pushing the joystick brought up that screen with all those useful parameters.

They retained the function with the 7D, except it now gets it's own dedicated button at top left on the back of the camera.

It's a really useful function IMO - should be standard across the range.

LOL for the first time ever I RTFM'd but other than that rather scant description the manual is tosh.

Found it has a few hot pixels but when I open the image in photoshop they dissapear so I'm not unduly fussed. Didn't get out with it today because of a migraine, but going to have a trip to Blackpool Zoo tommorow so it will get a run there.

You're right Paul but Chris was asking if that multi-controller button actually allows one to move around and thus change the settings on the Info screen. On a 5D2 you can access each setting via this button. On a 1D series while you can see the Info screen you can only access the settings if you press the Mode/AF Drive or Metering Mode switches on the LHS top panel of the camera.

As CT suggested, Canon should really standardise this operation. They should certainly have utilised it in the 1D4 but I'm betting they would rather maintain the unique characteristics of each series.......


Sorry to hear about the migraine Chris. Hope it's very temporary. Pretty sunny down in London - too sunny for pics IMHO.
