2 completely different camera's
5D advantage of full frame, 12 mp, larger sensor, slightly fast flash sync, better ISO capabilities, disadvantage 9 point focus, 3fps, autofocus for action very average
1D 1.3x crop, 8mp, 45 point focus, 8.5 fps, very fast auto focusing and small shutter lag, disadvantages 1.3x crop, ISO performance average
so if its more people, landscapes, indoor, low light then 5D, if you want fast focusing then 1D

I have both to cover all bases. Have the 5dmk2 now, but previously had the mk1.
As said, it depends on where your interests lie. For 90% of my stuff, the 1D stayed in the bag.

I own both cameras (well my MkII is an N) and I agree fully with the above.

I have both at present.
The synopsis above is good, however, the 1D is a superb camera and tbh its not that far off the 5D on IQ, which is to be expected given its 1.3 crop and only 8mp, I think the pixel density/size is very similar. The 1D is about a stop noisier though so anything above 800 Iso and the 5D wins. Where the 1D wins is its allround ability which just edges the 5D in my view as its so robust and reliable.
If you asked me which one I would keep if I could only keep one then I'd just be stumped, they are both very good at what they do.
One last point the 1D mk2 might be getting a little old and used now, potentially a 5D would/could have had light amateur use the 1D maybe more pro use, ask how many actuations, check condition and try both as the 1D is a big old lump, you might prefer the handling of one over the other and combined with condition could sway your choice. The 1D also has some very odd button controls that you might either love or hate, I like them on the 1D.
And a final point (another one!) comms between camera and computer need firewire on the 1D, it was a weak point on the 1D and many dont work, mine nevr has for me (although I know the previous owner had it working as he set my name against the body which can only be done via the firewire connection). Some of the Custom control sets need firewire unless you want to revert back to factory default, which can be done by the one of the functions in camera (I think).
