Canon 1d mkIII - What wide angle lens?

Hi all,

I recently aquired myself a 1d mkIII after owning a 40D, I had a Sigma 10-20mm for the 40D but now need a simialr wide lens for the 1D.

I was looking to get a 17-40L but thinking now that is more suited to a full frame body, and it might not be wide enough on the 1D (I shot alot at 10-12mm with the Sigma as I liked the affect you get, cliche for car shots I know but it works )

So I guess I should be looking at a 12-24mm lens - I know most lenses pretty well except this range, can anyone comment on the various lenses in this range, which ones are the good ones and also if possible a rough price. I have no set budget other than say sub £400ish, i.e not looking at the 16-35mm Canon.

So I guess looing at Sigma 12-24 (mkI or mkII?), Tokina 12-24 (I assume the 11-16 won't fit?), and any others, I see canon don't make a 12-24?

I also found the 17-40mm good on my 1D, of you want a fisheye there's the Tokina 10-17 or the Canon 8-15 that would work.

I'm pretty sure there was a thread about which wide angle for 1.3x earlier in the week, maybe worth a search?

Tokina 12-24 and 11-16 fit to a similar extent - about 70% of the range is perfectly usable, but it will vignette at the widest settings. To be me it is a very reasonable compromise, considering both outperform 17-40mm for sharpness (but not flare).

Indeed.

Just not sure if I need something wider, I quite like these shots I got at Le Mans with the 10-20mm on the 40D.

The Sigma 12-24 on a 1D will give you just about the same angle of view as the 10-22 on a 1.6 crop. It's full-frame, too, so won't vignette badly at the shorter focal lengths. Re: fisheyes, the old Canon 15 is pretty good on a 1D, too.

Thanks, I think I will go with the siggy and change it if needed after, I would really like a 'like for like' replacement so makes sense. Will cover me nicely with the 24-105 and 70-200mm.

Check out the Samyang 14mm f/2.8, superb glass and not too expensive.

Now that is a curveball............. seems few used ones for sale.

No AF right? By all accounts it's rather sharp though.
