just seen this maybe old news to some people. looks very nice. the built in 1.4 converter will come in very handy be interesting to see if it effects image quality but will come with a hefty price tag of about $10,000 USD. it maybe as long as mid 2014 before its released

Had a play with one down at Focus - what a beast of a lens and very very nice ...
 
I don't see the advantage of the built in converter. Loss of one stop on top of the f/4 max aperture.... I can see the usefulness of the 200-400 zoom but the inbuilt TC is not for me.
 
Would love that lens , way out of my budget tho :'(

Built in TC a clever idea I think, makes it an awesome all round wildlife lens:)

If you find you've run out of reach it is a 2 second job to swing the lever across and engage the converter, much quicker than taking the lens off, going to your bag, getting a converter out, locking it onto the camera, fitting the lens to the converter and then trying to get the shot.
 
Also, a builtin TC is tailored for that lens and doesn't have to comprimise anything for the sake of compatibility with other lenses so overall it should mean better quality/performance or something!
 
Yes for those times when you have enough light, a 560 f5.6 lens could be just the ticket to get the shot. With cameras able to shoot at very high ISOs these days too it should be perfectly useable at that on a good camera.

Quick example - shooting a football game at 400mm, then wanting to shoot the managers who are invariably just too far away for 400mm, flip the teleconverter in and you're sorted.

Another football example - a penalty is given at the other end and you can flip the TC in quickly to shoot that, then flip it out again as the play restarts.

Lots of value in it for the sports chaps I think.
 
There were several of these doing the rounds at the Olympics last year.

Didn't hear a bad word about them from any of the photographers I read had used them.

Hold up is likely Canon building up demand. The longer we wait, the more likely we'll impulse buy. Also might be doing what most company's do these days, test test test. Make sure it's right for sale.
 
So is anyone planning to get rid of their 400 2.8 IS in order to purchase one ?
 
I had a good go with one of these at the 2012 Bird Fair. I thought it was very nice, it was attached to a 1DX which made it even better. The built-in 1.4x TC is great, need a bit more reach, just flip it in. Want a bit faster and less focal length, flip it back out, easy.

I don't think it is going to be a big seller though, due to the expected high cost, but it will suit some people very well. If it was in the £4k price range I would have considered one (2nd user one of course so circa 3k) but they are going to be more than 2x that.

This is not a replacement for the 100-400, it is in a totally different class and is not particularly hand holdable (perhaps briefly), so monopod/tripod it will be.
