Canon 24-105 F4 or 28-70 F2.8 - Cant Decide

Hi i currently have a 450D, 18-55, 50mm F1.8 and 18-135mm. Looking to get a better lens and been looking at these. They seem to retail for around the same sort of price but undecided which is the better buy?

Any advice appreciated or maybe there is another lens worth considering?
 
15-85mm is also very good, and designed for a crop body unlike the 24mm lenses
 
the 28-70 f2.8 will let in more light so its much better for low light shooting, the 24-105 have better focal range. both give good optic.

It really depend whats your need.
 
24/28 at the wide end would be too long for me. The 15-85 (as mentioned) is a great lens and stays on our 7D 95% of the time. The IS system is great, although it won't freeze moving things. You'll get less vignetting and possibly less distortion with the 24/28- but you can't make up for wider lenses if that's what you need.

Better only if your subject moves but the IS version will be better for stationary objects as the IS allows allows for 3 stops faster shooting. :thumbs:
 
I have the same problem as the OP but as I own a 5d2 I have even less choice.
I have had both the 24-70 and 24-105 for over a year now and am no closer to working out which to keep...
 
Do you mean the Canon 24-70, as the 28-70 is an older lens ?

Which is more important / useful to yourself - the 2.8 or a longer focal length and IS. I've not had a play with both together to be able to compare side by side. I have tried them on seperate occasions and the 24-70 is a very nice lens, but for me I'm edging to the 24-105 as the extra focal length and IS is more of a benefit to what I shoot.

The 24-105 also retails approx £130-150 cheaper than the 24-70 (new prices) currently - more of a difference in price if you go for a 'white box' 24-105 which has been split from a kit. This may also be a deciding factor for you - it is for me...
 
17-55 all the way on crop. Better zoom range for most situations than either of the 24-x lenses, as fast as the 24-70, IS like the 24-105, optically excellent - best of both worlds - unless you really need the long end. Only thing is it doesn't have weather sealing and can accumulate dust but this rarely affects photos.

Thats nothing to do with being designed for crop - 15mm is 15 mm wither on an efs lens or a full frame which is my point. the fact that he is looking at the 24-105 and the 24-70 suggests the op is not interested in a wider focal length.

The 15-85 is no where near the IQ of the 24-105 or 24-70 either.
 
If I can add my tuppence in, I deliberated over the same decision. I went for the 24 - 105 in the end, mainly for the extra reach. One thing I hadn't considered is how heavy it would be. If I am out and about, with this on my 40d and carried on the shoulder you really feel it. Its uncomfortable to be honest. Fine of course if you are by the car, but I spend a lot of time in Central London so this is not always practical.

And apparently the 24 - 70 is even heavier!

You may wish to consider this in your deliberations.

My point being you can't get a wide range EF lens starting at 15/16/17mm. You have the 16-35 or 17-40, but then that restricts you to shorter long lengths.

Good point above, the 28/70 is now in fact 24/70 (still f2.8) and yes its a big old lump of a lens. I deliberated over the two in question but decided I wanted f2.8 more than f4 and IS, of course what would be nice is f2.8 AND IS, rumours abounded that the 24/70 was being upgraded but I decided not to wait and buy anyway. Mine is fitted permanently to my 5D and its a lovely combo. Not so sure it would work so well on a crop body as its obviously designed for a FF and 28 becomes 45mm which is hardly wide angle. I'd look into getting a wider ef-s lens instead (unless you think you might go FF in the future). There are some great ef-s lenses but none will ever carry the L designation (according to Canon) so if its L designation which is driving you towards the two you are looking at then ignore it as I think you'll pay a lot just for having the option of going FF.

I have had both Lenses... each has good and bad points... just remember the 24-70 f2.8 is an awesome Lens but is also very heavy to shoot with for a long time :thumbs:
