I have a new 24-105 and am concerned by the focus motor noise. Is this normal as I have never experienced it on other Canon lens? It seems excessive and carries on for a few seconds after focus is achieved:thumbsdown:

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

dunno. I had a 24-105 and the IS was silent. I then had a 70-200 F4L IS which sounded a bit like a kettle boiling (quietly).

I had a 24-105 which would make a noise like the IS on the old 75-300 and it was loud, i turned the IS off most of the time as i only needed it inside.

my 70-200 makes that slight kettle boiling sound, but it is barely audible to anyone other than the camera holder. small price for the quality i say!

Thanks for the input guys-I think I will take it back and compare it with others-its a very recent build Aug 2009!! Didnt know they could get them over from Japan that fast!!

I remember the 24-105 being quite a noisy little device but the AF and tracking speed didnt seem to be impacted in anyway.

The IS on my 70-200 2.8 is pretty "Rumbly" - nothing to worry about though, I initially had the same thought as you and panicked lol :)

Thanks Rob and Pearce that describes the noise well! I am going to see my supplier on Thursday ref another matter(tele convertors!!) and will take it with me anyway to see what they think!!

Well some good news! I have used the lens at the weekend and do not notice the noise at all!! Just seems loud when I was playing with it in the office. I must be getting paranoia. Thanks again for all the advice:bonk:
