Ok,am I missing something here. If I had a 24-105 as a walkabout lens, would there be any point buying a 100mm as the range is covered. Or can I assume because its a macro lens it has a completely different function.

Can anyone offer any advice as to.whether these lens cross purposes? Or whether they are still good money for A.general shots and portrait B.macro

Thanks everyone

Depends on how much low light you plan to do. Personally I aim to have more primes than zooms purely for the fact I tend to like keeping my ISO low whenever I can especially at weddings and low light events.

Cheers teshi, I think the main issue is I don't know whether the 24-105 offers close up work or whether the macro lens is a completely different function. Therefore justifying both rather than having two that do similar

Depends on how close in you want to go. Why not just consider extension tubes if you want to give macro a go without forking out for a whole new lens?

Certainly, my 100mm L macro is sharper and a stop faster than the 24-105.... It isn't essential, but is a nice to have IMHO.
