Canon 24-70 2.8 bounced 3 times

Whilst shooting a wedding yesterday, my 24-70 rolled off the back of a table (3ft high) and bounced at least 3 times on a wooden floor. I closed my eyes and expected the worst. In fact, I tried it out and is working fine.

After shaking it gently, nothing sounds as if it is loose and it still zooms and focus okay.

However, when zooming up to the 70mm end, the grooved focussing ring drags a little and makes a grating sound. Hubby insists I send it off somewhere to be checked over.

Do you guys agree it needs attention? and if so, where would I send it to, as I purchased it 2nd hand off a TP member (Trip) back in February 2008.

Would be grateful for any suggestions - thanks

I would get it repaired, as it has clearly suffered some damage. Even if it's cosmetic, I would not be happy with that. You've got an L lens because you want the best, and while L lenses are sturdily built, apart from the obvious damage you might have dislodged one of the elements. Expect a hefty bill unfortunately, but I would get it properly sorted. It's also unsaleable as it stands.

To check if it's okay optically, shoot a distant subject like a road sign or number plate at 50mm f/2.8 with a high shutter speed. Take four pics with the target in each of the four corners. Enlarge each one to max on the LCD, and see it any of the corners are noticeably softer than the others. Don't look for supreme sharpness as you wont get it (no wide zoom is ever that good at full bore) but if one or more corners looks worse then you've knocked the glass out of alignment.

Honestly, don't bother! Hoppy was spot-on with his advice to get it repaired - don't do anything which might distract you from that.

Let's say it looks OK if you test it this way - are you going to decide not to send it away? The dragging & the grinding of the focussing ring is NOT RIGHT and there's a possibility that you're doing more damage all the time you use it in this state. Little bits of plastic may be being ground off and falling into other parts of the mechanism.

I don't know if they're a competitive price, but Canon use Colchester Camera Repair Services for their repairs.

Stroller.

A mate of mine did the same thing with a 70-200f2.8Lis but from about 5 foot on to concrete, just like yours the soom ring goes tight at the long end but it works fine and has for the last 3 years.

Thanks to all you guys for the advise. I kinda knew what you would say, as the little voice in my head was saying the same.

I will give Colchester CRS a call tomorrow for an estimate etc. Is this the only place you guys know to send Canon lenses away to?

What about Fixation? anyone tried them?

Regards Gillian

my 70-200 fell out of my bad onto the floor, the uv filter shattered but luckely didnt visibly scratch the front element, when i heard the smash i almost cried but it seems fine even though it looks to have something inside it... but it shoots the same so im leaving it, but if i were you and had time i would send it in for a check-up

I should have said they're one of the places that Canon use for their own repairs.

I sent off my 70 - 300mm IS this week for its much overdue recall service, and they gave me the choice of 4 service centres - Colchester & three others. I didn't take a note of the others, because I've seen other people talking of using Colchester, but it looks like the others are listed on Canon's website (choose "Pro lens" from the drop-down).

Googling shows another forum in which a couple of people recommend Lehmanns.

anywere near dorset that can provide a quick service anyone know about?

I used colchester cameras for a repair to our 400D - 6 day turnaround which I thought was great.

Ah! now that's only about an hour and a bit from here Bob, I will ring around now.

Thanks

Ouch.

I dropped a Sigma accidentally a while back- split the barrel at the back- surprisingly only £90 to get fixed.

I have used fixation a number of times, good service - they will give a free estimate - you need to pay postage - i think Colchester have the edge on price but have not used them (fixation are in London)

it's nice to know these things bounce - i did the same with a 1d +70-200f2.8 and a flash - the flash shoe broke on the flash (£20) the rest of the kit was fine.....

Gilly, it'd be interesting to know what's wrong, and how much it cost to fix!

Lehmans are OK if you want a return time of "ring when it's done, could be a day could be 2 weeks." I've stopped using them as the last couple of repairs I've had done with them, I got really messed about and had to hire a couple of lenses to get me through the week.
I now use Fixation and their customer service is really excellent, I've got a worn out 24-70 with them now, got an estimate the day after delivery and I know when it's coming back :)

I have the opposite service from Lehmans, phone up book it in take it down and wait for it to be repaired, take it home with you, out of the 3 times i have used them every time thats what has been done.

After ringing around, I chose Fixation who were really helpful. Posted it off this morning RMSD £9.00. They are going to contact me tomorrow with an estimate and if necessary an estimate report for the insurance company.

I am with Photoguard and spoken with them yesterday. The guy advised to download the claim form from their website and then wait and see what Fixation come up with.

I will keep you posted with regard to: customer service, time and cost of this incident.

Regards

Gillian

Just to update you on the lens. So far everything has happened quite quickly.

Fixation has produced an Estimate Report for my Insurance Co (Photoguard). With labour, parts, VAT & Carriage, the final amount is £170.15. I was shocked! It needs internal collars, rear cover and rubber seal. Seems a lot but the labour is £95.00.

Scanned all the documents into my PC and sent the claim by e-mail and PDF attachments. Spoken to Photoguard to make sure they have everything in order to make a decision. They are happy that everything is in order and now waiting for them to get back to me.

So glad I sent it away as the damage is internal. Also glad I have insurance. Will let you know the outcome.

Gilly

Sweet! I'm guessing you only have the excess to pay?

No, I am fortunate that there is no excess. Photoguard explained that they do not process claims under £100 - so I suppose that is the 'excess'.

Oh; now thats good. I might have to look into Photoguard for insurance.. I think my current excess is quite hefty.. about £200 or so.

Thanks for the update Gilly. Glad you got it sorted :)

It could have been much worse, I bet your heart was in your mouth when it was bouncing!
At least you now know it is working as it is supposed too, if you didn't get it repaired you would have always had a feeling that is wasn't right when using it!

Glad you are getting it sorted.
As regards to lehmans, I used them last month for a lens repair. Dropped the lens of to them, and got an estimate the next day. After I told them to go ahead, I got a mail exactly 7 days later saying it was ready to collect.

Thanks for the replies Guys. I will let you know how long it takes for the insurance to give the nod and then time it takes to repair and return.

You are right Woodsie, I would have been left wondering if everything was okay. Can't wait until it is back in my hands though.

Gilly B - thanks for the heads up regarding your insurer...I have been with Chubb I thin it is, through the AOP insurers...the excess is £250 on any claim.

Off to seewhat Photoguard can offer for renewal time now....not until about June, but gives me time to do some phone mileage!

Fixation are an excellent outfit, they will see you right and be on time. I haven't put any repairs their way, but I have an account and buy stuff of them. Next day, always, unless it isn't in stock. Then they find out where, how much and when. Couldn't ask for better customer service.

Thanks Lensflare for the vote of confidence for Fixation. I hope Photoguard are true to their word and agree the go-ahead soon. I think it will be useful for fellow Togs to know how insurance companies perform under certain circumstances, which will (or not) increase their customer base.

Come on Photoguard, I am waiting

Sorry guys for not updating this sooner. I have been in hospital.

Photoguard (JTOnline) approved the claim within a couple of days by e-mail and once I paid Fixation for the work done, a cheque arrived in the post for the full amount a couple of days later.

Impressed that everything went smoothly and my lens is working a treat now. I am glad I was with Photoguard and even more pleased that I chose Fixation. Both of these companies said they had worked together on claims before and knew each other's system of working.

£171.15 paid out including RM Special Delivery. I got every penny back.

Hope that helps someone considering Insurance for their kit.

Regards

Gillian

Hope you're in as good shape as your lens :)

I shall not be taking out specific camera insurance (it's covered under the house policy) but I'll make double-sure not to drop anything!
