Hi all, Well second post today. Hopefully someone can help?
I have just purchased a canon 300mm 2.8 is but it does not have a lens hood or tripod collar. Could anyone offer advice on where to purchase other than Ebay, i've just looked there but nothing. Obviously I am skint now so original parts may not be any option. If that is my only choice would anyone mind telling me how to source in the UK

The tripod ring is part YG9-0618 and the hood is ET-120. You can buy the hood from a few places like Warehouse Express etc, but it isn't cheap (£300+). The tripod collar looks to be about £200 as well, although may be easier to contact Canon directly and I've seen them on the ebay.com site for $275 (£180).

yes hoods are very expensive.. i dont really understand why.,. the hood for a 300 is quite plain.. only place i have seen is to order direct from canon :(
 
Look into an aquatech soft hood. Does the job and will probably be cheaper than the Canon.

Hey, thanks all for the replies. I have sourced a lens hood though it is missing the screws or screw inside that secures it to the lens. I have a drawing of the hood though it is a little vague. Woud anyone be so kind to take a snapshot of the inside of the hood so I can see what I have to achieve to get this to fit securely. thanks

Thanks Bob, thats a great help and thank you for taking the time to do this. I am missing the black bit, and i'm buggered if i am going to pay $100 dollars for a new lock nut part. I think i will try to get something machined at work. I take it all the nut does is push the black 'tooth' into the flange of the lens. I'm sure there are many ways to doctor this. I paid £175 for the hood which is in very good condition apart from the missing black tooth!
 
Pete,

It appears that the engaging "black bit" is floating on the end of a threaded stud which is set into the knurled knob on the outside. I suspect that the mounting block is threaded to carry the stud and afford the grip.
I can strip it down into its component parts if that'll help you.

A quick description......
The knurled knob is fixed onto the shaft by a roll pin. The mounting boss is threaded to accept the stud which passes through a hole in the locating dog and is secured by a circlip in the slot. The dog has no thread and just spins on the end of the stud.

Pete - if you are looking for a carry case for the 300/2.8 (lockable Canon 300 case) let me know as I've one I don't use any more. I'll put it up as a for sale post so satisfy all the TP rules, just had no interest in it in the past.

Bob, your a star! Thanks for that. I owe you a few litres, I think all I need is the black tongue, but I need to dis-assemble my lock nut and see exactly what I have in good order. Is this the only part that secures the hood to the lens?
It would be great of you could provide the dims for the tongue, I could probably get this machined at work. God knows where I will get a e-clip that small from though!
I would love the case but at the mo my priority is a tripod collar, and the wallet is looking a little thin at the mo. I also have no access to the sale part of the forum? But if you still have the case I. The near future I would love to purchase it. Thanks again bob.

I'll sort out the measurements and put them on a sketch along with the circ-clip size.
When you ask about it being the only part securing the hood to the lens, I assume that the insert with the protruding rail is in there....the part starting each side of the two screws shown in the final shot in post #10.
This insert is slightly oversize when compared to the end of the lens barrel and the locking "dog" moves inwards to effectlively reduce the internal diameter (albeit at only one point on the circumference).

Pete if it would help I have a 300mm 2.8 non is (I think hood mech is exactly the same) and I see your Dorset based like me, I happily meet up for you to have a look/measure/poke/prod

It might be worth a phone call to Elstree once you know exactly what you need, just to check a price ???

Hope you manage to source / make what you need, it's a lens I'd love in the future...

Hi thanks all for your help and advice, and a merry Christmas to you all! I am a little confused as to ringing Elstree as the last time I phoned them; they told me to ring Lehman’s? Did I speak to the wrong area perhaps? Alsos, it would be great to meet up, maybe when you are out and about and whenever is convenient for you? I'll take some shot of the hood Bob, I do have the ring bit thing, I am probably being a bit daft, I just thought there would be two locking teeth either side of the hood for that extra tight fit. Of course without the tooth I can not see how secure it would actually be. Once again many thanks to all that have been so helpful to me! (update, now I have sobered up slightly.....I can see how it all works. I only need the black tooth and e-clip so if I can get through to the right area at Elstree perhaps they may just supply that part?)

I thought the same Pete about it not being a good fit. Its suprising how well just the one tooth does lock it though

The parts list doesn't show it reduced to the individual components and it's supplied as an assembly with pt# CY1-4189 (unconfirmed). Lehmann's will probably be a better option than Canon at Elstree.

Hi, thanks all, I hope everyone had a great Christmas day & Boxing day! I have tried phoning Lehmanns but they are closed till new year. I should be able to get this machined so, Bob if I drop you a p.m as requested would you still be willing to scribble down some measurements? I feel extremely cheeky but it would be a great help!
 
Well the guy's in the Engineering Dept said no probs to machining a lock tooth for me, so many thanks to Bob and everyone else who helped with this. I have managed to order a Tripod collar from Colchester Cameras which should be arriving within 10 days. Incidently they were nearly £100 cheaper than other CPS centers.:razz:
When I have a few more pennies, I will endevour to order the Lensmaster Gimbal with plate so hopefully should be all up and running by Feb!! :wave:
 
Hmmm, interesting, i had the exact same problem when i shot Canon, a trip to my local friendly Jewellers and he knocked me something up which was better then the original locking screw, cant remember the cost, something silly like £10
