Canon 300mm F/4 IS - Example shots request

Hi all,

I may be in the position where i can buy this lens soon, i'd absolutely love to be able to afford a 2.8 version but being only 16 i simply can't find that sort of money so i have decided the F/4 would satisfy my requirements for a period of time.

Just hoping someone with this lens could post some sample shots, image subject is irrelevant but would be better if it was sports of some kind, but all subjects are welcome. Camera body doesn't have to be the same as mine but if anyone has the lens on a 40D that'd be great.

Have a look at any of my posts from last year... if the EXIF says 300mm or 420mm it was with that lens... its a very nice bit of kit and no mistake.

Great lens, works well with the 1.4x TC but to get the best you need the light conditions. My prime lens for most motorsport or aircraft photography, although would bite my right arm off to get the f2.8 version

What is auto focus like with the TC?

It really depends on the light conditions and how good you are at keeping your focus point on the subject when panning. The 400mm f5.6 is a good life, primarily for wildlife and birds, question you need to ask yourself is, do I need a 300mm lens that I can make a 420mm lens with a TC (basically 2 lenses for price of one) or I'm I primarily at the extremes all the time and require a 400mm lens.

Hmm, it's pretty much for motorsports stuff, to go above my 70-200 f2.8. So AF speed is most important. I can imagine it will only come out when I need the extra length over the 200 so will probably go for max anyway :shrug:

Depends where you go and how much access to the track side at events you get. Even at Brands, probably one of the best motor circuits I've visited. In places especially as I was behind the fences, say at Druids, even the 300mm + 1.4x TC wasn't really enough to removed the fencing altogether, really needed a 500mm lens, on the other hand, with a media vest, a 70-200mm or 300mm lens would have been perfect, other tracks like Silverstone or Donnington, your looking at 400mm minimum because of the fencing.

Can't comment on the 400mm f5.6 as a motorsport lens, in good light it probably very good, its fast focusing and light weight on the plus side, think the f5.6 will let it down in certain situations with the light, but its a better lens than the 100-400mm @ the 400mm end.

The 400 5.6 is probably about the same as the 300 + 1.4x.... but with the 300+TC you have two lengths to play at and at 300mm its much better than the 400 5.6 at 400mm...

Remember coming down 1 stop is actually HALF as much light.... so you can see how much that will make...

Thats why you get very contrasty images with things like the 100-400 or 400 5.6 or even the 70-300 above 210mm (when it drops into f5.6 territory) because the detail in the shadows is being lost...

This is an AWESOME lens. I only got rid because I can't afford to own a series of L lenses and this lens isn't so good everyday. Superb with a 1.4x TC and pretty good macro too.

Hmm, I shoot all over the place, usually with a media vest though, my next job is at Donnington, so maybe I'll hire a 400f5.6 for the weekend to see how I get on.
