canon 400d problem

hi i have been using my 400d since april without any problems, last night if shoot a lot of photos of my aunts kids,

the problem came with down loading the pictures, i plugged hte cf card into their card reader and the computer would not find any pictures on the card, i then tried plugging the camera into the computer and the computer would not show any pictures up either.

when i tried to take more picture the camera told me htere was a card error and would not write any more picture but the camera would let me view pictures on it.

i endedup formating hte card so that i could use it.

any ideas why this happened and how i can stop it happening again

Try using another card and see what happens.

It does sound like the card has failed, there are quite a few 'image recovery' programs out there which can find images on your card even though you've formatted it. It's worth a try in case the card failed after or during the shoot and at least some the pictures you want are there.
