Completely random and very frustrating.

It didn't get knocked, banged, dropped. Sitting at the North West 200 road racing on Saturday half way through the day. I remember hitting the shutter button by accident and heard the camera autofocusing. 2 minutes later went to take a photo and the camera is dead. Charged the batteries (three different ones) so its not them. The camera is 2 and a half years old now and has 100000 odd clicks on it.

If it was the shutter had died surely the power would still come on?

The backup battery... if it was dead, the camera would still power up right? As I was under the impression the backup battery is only to keep the time/date right.

Anyone else had this problem or any ideas on how to fix it?

For the record I've done the so-called 'reset' by leaving the battery and backup battery out for an hour and still no joy. Also tried different lenses and cleaned the contacts on the battery and in the battery port.

:help::bang::'(

Thanks!

Fingers crossed for you , i had as some may remember a Canon 5d go dead

That as you will see was sept 2009 .. Jessops in the end met me half way on the repair .. It is with them now .. I was lucky i had a second 5d , well i say lucky because i have just had that one back after that also went dead .. Both were around 2 years old with 6000/7000 actions ...

Now have 2 5d mk 2 body's .. Lets hope Canon have it sorted .. But then again they told me it wasn't a comon fault .. :thinking: .. Or maybe it is ..

Keep us posted .. But you might want to drop it in a bucket of water and get the Insurance policy out ..

Ran out last December :thumbsdown::thumbsdown::thumbsdown:

Would household content insurance cover this sort of thing?

You have to look on the bright side, a new camera is in the near future for you.

We claimed for the second one saying the little lad covered it in water ..
I just couldn't be bothered going through Canon or Jessops again .. The house insurance paid out no problem ..

It may not be a great idea to suggest and admit to fraud on a public forum.

The camera fell down the stairs tonight. Don't believe it!

:bang:

Sorry to hear of this gastly accident ;)

Your house insurance will payout if you have personal contents marked on the policy, from my experience the company will collect the camera and try to repair. If they can't repair they will try and offer you a replacement, possibly even the same model. They may offer you another brand I would decline that on the grounds that all your kit is Canon. Since the 40d is no longer in manufacture you could get a 50D (don't hold your breath though). All failing you will get the cash for a new replacement but again since the 40D is no longer in production I dont know how they would work the ammount out.

I know this because I recently put my iPhone in the washing machine :bonk:
