I'm currently out and about on my travels on motorbike with hubby and don't have my manual with me, so can someone talk me through what settings I need to make auotfocus work when in live view on my Canon 40D? I used to just press the "AF on" button when in live view, but that no longer works, so I guess I've changed a setting somewhere, but have no idea what to re-set it to.

I only have limited access to Internet, but will be able to log in for the next 48hrs. Thanks for any response.

Carole,

It's CFn III-6 to enable AF during Liveview. You also need to use the centre AF point and One Shot.....be careful on the bike.

Quickest way is to reset everything. You may have switched the buttons, does it focus if you press * ?

That's a bit haphazard isn't it... if I did that to my 450D I'd lose a lot of settings!

40D doesn't have contrast-detect live view AF, so I hope you're not looking for that ;)

From page 114 of the manual....

Note that it is very misleading when it says "cover the subject with the focusing frame" since the position of the "focusing frame" has no bearing on AF - only the centre point is used for AF. The focusing frame is used purely to check focus or to focus manually.

Many thanks people, especially tdodd for the manual. It seems all my settings were correct, I just wasn't pressing the AF ON button for long enough! A quick press causes the mirror up to function, but is not enough for the focus to work. I'd never realised that before, as I tend to only use Live View when shooting over my head in a crowd and had always assumed the poor image quality was due to that!

So the moral of the story....don't be too gentle with the AF on button :))

PS: Spain by motorbike is just brill!!
