Yes
I'm considering a 50 f1.4, but i've noticed the sigma is 70quid more than the canon. I'd normally look at the prices and not think the canon isn't worth the extra and go for sigma.
Is there something wrong with the canon 50? or is the Sigma just a mega lens for the money?
thanks

J

ps forgot to say will be using on both my 1d3 and 5d.

Some reviewers say that the Sigma is setting the standard. I have one and I like it. It compliments my 50mm F2.5 "macro."

We have one of each in our business, I have the Sigma and my business partner has the Canon.

* The Sigma is bigger and heavier (over200g heavier) but has better build quality imo.

* They are both pretty fast to focus wide open

* They both give very nice colours in images, I personally think the Sigma is slightly better than the canon.

* The Sigma comes with a lens hood and pouch as standard so if you routinely use a lens hood factor in adding one to the price of the canon which doesnt come as standard with one.

* Filter thread on the Canon is 58mm, its a whopping 77mm on the sigma so you should also factor this in if you use filters.

* Lens hood locks in place much more securely on the Sigma and thats one thing I definitely prefer to the Canon.

You would be happy with either lens I am sure.

I have had the Sigma for a couple of months and I love it. From all the reviews and heresay I looked into before I got it most people rate it higher than the Canon.

I tried both 50mm lenses before settling for the Sigma 30mm F/1.4 (I have a 7D and 30mm suits a 1.6crop better). On FF I would choose the Sigma 50mm over the Canon due to superior build quality and sharpness at F/1.4. I will see if I can dig up any of my test shots when I get home tonight, but the Sigma 50mm was definately much sharper than the Canon wide open. The Canon did seem to focus more consistently, but that could be my 7D. Both Sigmas seemed to front focus on my Body and require +8 to +10 Micro Focus Adjustmnet to get them spot on.

Another Nikon user with the siggy. Great lens:)

I wanted the Canon 50mm f1.4, but after I had tried both of them I brought the Sigma 50mm f1.4. It is a great lens.

To elaborate slightly on Orville's points:

The Sigma was specifically designed to give the best possible image quality at F1.4 on a full frame body. In particular it is designed to minimise vignetting (shadowing at the corners of the image). This is why it's bigger, heavier and much more expensive than pretty well any other 50mm F1.4 on the market.

The Canon 50mm F1.4 was designed to give the best performance at much narrower apertures.
