Canon 500D and EOS utility problem

My camera is recognised by both of my PC's, shown in device manager and the pc's responds to the camera by starting the EOS utility. One PC displays an error that the camera isnt recognised the other pc allows EOS utility to open but none of the camera functions are available. Usually the camera will give the option to transfer images when EOS utility is open but that isnt happening the screen remains blank.

If I connect the 450D it works as it should and with all the stuff below I have tried it points to the camera.

Stuff I have tried
remove and reinstall of the software before trying the other PC
tried the 2 updated versions available from the canon site
tried 3 different USB cables
tried all the USB ports on the original pc
tried different memory cards
reset the camera settings

I have seen a few old posts regarding the 30D but nothing shows a solution.

Any ideas?

I don't really have any great ideas but here goes:

- is there a later version of DPP\EOS Utility you can install?

- Are you using the EOS that came with the 450d or the 550d?

Can you download them using the windows picture reader or whatever it is called (not sure it does raw), or I guess you can download them by putting the card in the 450d, no long-term solution I know...

Good luck

Al

I originally installed the version with the 500d, updated to the 2 updates that have been made available. The 450D works fine with this. I then put the 450d version on and it was still the same.

I can browse the camera and view the photos no problem there which makes it even more strange as it works, talks to the pc just not eos utility.

It got worse, I went to test for a wedding venue and put the 580ex2 on top and it was only regestering TTL and blowing out the test shots, no ballencing or anything, took the same shots on the 450D and all worked perfectly.

I am going to return the camera to the shop I bought it from, canon want it to go to service, I would like it sorting asap I hope to get a replacement as I need it for a holiday on Tuesday.

I may be barking up the wrong tree here completely but I had a problem with my laptop not uploading the pictures and it was the output setting on the camer being wrong...I changed mine to a printer output and it worked fine.

Like I say this might be completely wrong for your setup but it worked for mine.
