Canon 500mm f4

Hi all, Well I just missed out on a 500mm f4 canon. I could have paid £2800 for it but decided to watch the auction and take my chances. Of course I am now kicking myself as I did not win the auction and now I can't find anything similar. So my question is this; Is assuming I will find a 500mm f4 for between £2500-£2800 on a regular basis a bit too much to ask Santa or could I find something like this again soon? What are your experiences? I have looked in all the usual place but nothing around at mo., is there anywhere else worth looking other than eBay or MPB?

Pete,

If you can find a 500 f4 for £2500 then you should pay for a taxi and go get it. Expect to pay around £4K for one in good nick.

The 300 f/2.8 IS goes for about that price and you'll be lucky to get a 500mm f/4 for that price I think. Looking at closer to £3500-£4000+ for one depending on condition, although wait until January and all the VISA bills start dropping through doors and you might find someone who needs to shift one sharpish.

Hi, Thanks for reply. I thought it was a good deal; it sold for £2835. Pretty tatty 2004/5 version but claims had just been serviced. good optics etc. funnily enough FFordes advice was to wait till January for the same reasons you have mentioned!! Well i'll keep hunting and saving at the same time!
