Yes
I'm thinking of trading up to a 5d. Has anyone else done this upgrade, and if so, what are your thoughts / experiences between the two?

I went from 40D to 5d2 and wouldn't go back. I did however have the funds to replace my only EF-S lens at the same time.

5D2 gives crisper more vibrant shots but does suffer only 3.9Fps at full tilt. I'm not sure that really matters to most.

A number of mates now have 7D's and I have thought maybe that was a better route but at the time thought what the heck and got the 5d2.

Well worth the money :D

i did the 40D to the 5D and was very very pleased. You might find the 5D a little clunky though, in the sense that it is getting a little old now and the menus are laid out different to the newer bodies. Off the top of my head, I think the ISO handling of the 50D is more advanced, but I guarantee you'll fall in love with the Full Frame sensor.

I must admit, i'm not sure whether to trade my 50d against a secondhand 5d, or keep my 50d and buy a new 5d mk2? That way, i'd have the best of both worlds! Of course, would the 7d be a worthwile addition to what i already have? i'm not so sure. read some bad things about 7d's

I recently went from 50D to 5D - still getting to grips with the 5D so can't provide a detailed comparison.

Positives - full frame, IQ improved (IMO), fantastic with L lenses
Negatives - "old" technology, can't use EF-S lenses

I too wondered about going to the 5D2, although I'm not bothered about video so that, plus the fact someone here wanted to trade a 5D for a 50D, swung it for me.

With regard the menu system - it did seem very basic after the 50D (no joystick) however I've already got used to it. Also there are no auto zones (portrait, landscape etc) just the manual Av, Tv etc. Again not an issue to me.

Also worth noting, although not essential, is both the 5D & the 50D use the same batteries - handy if you already have spares.

All in all -

unless you need 2 bodies i would say just stick to one. i would say that if your budget allows then pick up a 5dmk2, or if your photography is generally in good light or with flash, then the 5D would last you ages.

Personally (and this is my own opinion) ever since I have been full frame, I can't live with cropped sensors, everytime I look through the viewfinder the tiny little screen/view frustrates me. I have had a lot of fun with my 40D, but now I could never go back.

To be honest, video really doesn't bother me. If i wanted to do any video recording, i'd use my video camera. Have never understood why camera manufacturers have started going down the route of building cameras with video recording facilities on them. I'd rather save a little on the price and have the camera supplied without the video recording facilities.

If you can manage it, that's pretty much what I'd do... Keep the 50D for longer range stuff and anything that requires a fast frame rate and use the 5DMKII for landscape and portrait stuff. :)

That way you'll have the best of both worlds.

Si
