Canon 50mm Macro f 2.5 for food

just been reading and thinking about this, but not sure if it would be better than my 24-105L for the MIII. the other day at work i was shooting some of my plated desserts and thought what about a macro lens.


after playing around taking pictures i saw that most of the shot's i got ranged from 40mm-60mm.

so would the 50mm macro be better than my current lens???

i also looked at the 100mm but its to long and not practical for my kitchen at work.

It's a cracking little lens and will do the job admirably. A TS-E45 would possibly be the ultimate but at 4x the price.

I used to have one of these and they're very good. Note that it's not a true macro, you need the lifesize adapter to make it so. Note also that it's an old design and is slow to focus.

On the positive side it's a good lens and I've read that it's Canon's sharpest 50mm.
 
If you can fill the frame with your zoom I don't think the macro lens will give you Mitch advantage. Normally you would buy a macro because of its close focusing ability in filling the frame with a small object and it having been optimised at that distance, also macros are designed for a flat field of focus, sounds like you don't need that either.
 
T&S 90 would be my choice for food, but unless you take full advantage of what it can do creatively, then 24-105 would be just as good.

It would be sharper than your zoom!!!!!!

But if you notice or not will depend on what aperture you use and how big you print or how close you look!!!!!

You probably don't "need" a 1:1 macro for food but it'll depend how big the food is!!!!!

And what you want to fill the frame with!!!!!!!

sorry to bring this thread back up but i am still thinking about this, chatting to a mate at work and he thinks the canon 100mm marco is the ultimate food lens, 100mm is way to long,

so far my food shots have been around 40-60mm mark and shot at f5-6 to f8. ill be using them for my self and to give to my chef as well.

so i know this may be silly but

canon 40mm pancake vs canon 50mm 1.4 or 1.8

vs my 24-105L at 40 or 50mm.

will these primes beat it???

At f/8, no.

Why don't you just get on with using your 24-105, and think about changing when you come across a problem?
 
1. The main point of f/2.5 lens is that you can shoot a f/2.5. This makes a lot of sense for food. If you shoot at f/8, then no difference at all.

2. The first lens I would pick for food is my 100mm macro, only because I haven't got 90TSE. I am sure there is a reason for that.

3. Just how big are your plates if you struggle for working distance?
