Canon 550d to Bigma "does size matter"

Quick question about the filter sizes for the Sigma 50-500 when used with a Canon 550d.

I noticed that Warehouse whatsits is selling this lens with a free (full sized)filter.
But the blurb says that it comes with a reduction ring for use with APS-C sensored lenses.

Is this because the APS-C does not use the full size of the end glass, so a reduced size and cost filter can be used?
Or would this full sized filter be ok on this camera?

Little confused as what this all means.
There must be more to this.

Any advice would be appreciated.

What it means is:

You will get a full sized UV filter. This will be fine for protecting the lens.

Should you want to use a different filter (say a CPL or coloured filter) and you have an APS-C sized sensor, you only need to buy an 86mm filter instead of a full 95mm. The attachment to allow you to do this is included with the lens. This will save you money on additional filters.

Yes, I was thinking around the UV filters purely for protection, rather than other CPL, coloured filters etc.

So there would be no harm in using the supplied filter on my camera. Great
