Canon 5D Classic or 5D Mk 11?

Despite the obvious resolution improvement of the MK 11 are there any benefits in getting a good MK 1 Classic for landscapes or should I keep saving the pennies? Is it a no-brainer?

Lots of togs seem to like the Classic but is that becau:se they can't afford the Mk 11. :bonk:

None at present. currently on Nikon on a cropped sensor but would aim to but s/h. I gather FD lenses are not suitable?

keep saving the pennies 5D3 should be out in the last 1/4 of this year so prices of the mark2 will be pushed down even further
 
Are you only doing landscapes or other types of shooting?

The AF seems to snap in a little quicker on the mkII over the classic but the original is still fine. I've even shot sports with the classic when my other body at the time had gone down and it was acceptable, just nothing like my 1DmkIII LOL.

The original 5D does a great job in many ways, and the quality is great, especially considering the pretty low price. My 5D is now my backup to the mkII at weddings etc although I do still take it out and about to save putting too many clicks on my mkII and I love what it can do, rarely am I left thinking I wish I had the mkII with me. It's only at a wedding/portrait session that I like to get more pixels on subject.

As for the 5DmkIII coming out, yes, it will be here at some point, but for me I say buy something when you need/want it so you can get shooting, if we kept waiting for the next new thing we would never buy anything.
 
I would definitely rather have a 5D now than wait months for a 5D2. Chances are the 5D will hold most of its value, so you can upgrade when you pull the extra cash together.

I switched from 5d to 5d2 a few months ago but that was by a sort of accident and I never found the 5D wanting.

Can I ask why you're not considering a D700?

It might not make sense but I love my D200 so much I'm determined to keep it for general shooting but for detailed landscapes the Canon 5D or 5D11 seem to offer the best resolution for the money since there's no way I can justify a D3X.

Of course I had forgotten about the video advantages of the Mk11

I was also thinking D700 would be sensible choice, especially if you are going to keep your D200.

I was in the 5D/5Dmk2 quandary a few months back, the attractive points for the mk2 were the sensor cleaning, better high ISO performance and 3 custom modes rather than 1. In the end I decided to save some money and get the mk1.
 
Hi Adam

I know you cannot directly equate film and digital but in my mind it's the reason you would shoot on medium format compared to 35mm -for the resolution.

I appreciate that Nikon offers ISO advantages but it does seem when I see a web image or printed landscape that I wow over it's been shot on a Canon 5D or DS.

Don't get me wrong I'm a great Nikon fan and love the fact that you can use the older primes it just that I'm getting hung up on resolution. Ok yes I love sharpness!

Is there a good example of an similar sized image shot on a D700 and 5D

Any further opinions welcome.

This site compares images from pretty much any camera available (you have to click 'all cameras' at the top of the screen, otherwise it only compares current models)

It's somewhat limited, it only compares camera jpgs with standard settings, but it's something to go on.

The 5D classic and D700 look very similar up to ISO 1600, after which the 5D obviously can't compete (it doesn't do any higher than 3200, which is only simulated by underexposing at 1600 and increased brightness)
The 5D has more chroma noise in the comparison (but this could be chroma NR from the D700's more advanced jpg engine), but this is very easily removed with noise reduction.
Detail looks the same between the 5D and the D700, I think the focus points are slightly different in this comparison, because the 5D looks sharper on things closer to the camera, whereas the D700 looks sharper on objects further away from the camera.

In the 5DII vs D700, the 5D II has more detail anywhere bellow ISO 1600 (thanks to 21mp vs 12), and the D700 has a touch less noise at the higher ISOs

What FX nikon lenses do you have? For landscapes, the 5D classic is probably just as good as the D700 for file quality but quite a lot cheaper (also lacks newer features like the good screen, sensor cleaning, live view and such (it's about the same as your D200 for age of the technology)), and if you don't have any good wide angle FX lenses for nikon then it'll work out cheaper overall.
If you can get used to canon's control system and can live without the newer technology, the 5D is the cheapest way to get superb full frame quality.

I've owned both the 5D Classic and MKII. I've also owned several xxxD, xxD and 1D bodies.

For everyday shooting the 1D mk2 is definitely my favourite camera so far. no plans on any changes. However, bang per buck, the Classic has got to be up there with the best IMO.

If budget is a concern, go with the classic. If money is not such an issue, go with the mk2, you won't regret it!!

I'd probably go for the classic and some nice glass if you don't have any at present.
