Canon 5d Flash

I am thinking of the next step and moving from my 400d to a 5d 1 or 2. I only have a Sigma 17-70 EFS and my other 2 lenses are EF 24-105 and 70-300. I like the idea of the 24-105 as my walk around on a FF camera and dump the 400d x 17-70 combo.

The only thing putting me off is the lack of an onboard flash for just that little bit of fill when out and about. I have a 580ex but don't habitually carry it around with me.

My subjects are very general, places, people, family, nothing specific.

So I guess my question is, does the lack of onboard flash cause you any problems ?

thanks

Jas

Hey Jas
Never used on board flash when I had my 40D, in fact never used any flash when using my camera during walk about. I fit my Speedlght only when I know I'm going to use it. I now use 5D1 and 24-105 as walkabout. I guess you need to think about how often you used it on the 400 and go from there. Maybe keep the 400 as well !

Thanks Trevor,

I guess I have just got into the habit of it !

I am sure I can get into the habit of adding my 580ex to the rucksack on the way out !

It's just one of those nagging niggles that you get just before you jump.

thanks

Jas

I have the 50D and 5D Mk1. Never use the onboard flash on 50D. Use speedlight for both when needed. Have a Canon 24-70 2.8 for 5D and use Canon 17-40 F4 with cropped sensor 50D for walk around

I moved from 30D to 5d2 and to be honest I've just got used to having the 430 on top :)

24-105 is an amazing walkround lens of the 5d!

No.

In fact, for me, a selling point of the 5D and 5D mk II is that they don't have built-in flashes. Nasty, flimsy things that spoil the otherwise rugged body of a SLR IMO.

I'm not that keen on flash photography anyway - I much prefer shooting in available light wherever possible. Flash destroys the atmosphere you get with ambient lighting, unless you're using it for something like a wedding and need to control shadows and catchlights.

I used to do a lot of available light shooting on my old film SLRs, using a 50mm f/1.2 lens and fast black-and-white film, but digital opens up a whole new world.. Colour casts are no longer a problem if you shoot in RAW and adjust the white balance later, and with something like the 5D mk II you can get amazing quality at high ISOs. I can get results that just wouldn't have been possible with film.

If you've never shot in available light before, give it a try.. all you need is a nifty fifty f/1.8 or f/1.4 or similar, a reasonably high ISO and a steady hand!

Here's a shot I did in a dimly-lit wine cellar on my 5D.. 1/50 sec at f/1.4, ISO 800:
