I've just bought a used 5D classic on this forum with the intention of moving to full frame from my current 60D.

The problem is I don't know what's the best thing to do. I have a great combo at the moment in the 60D with 17-55 f/2.8 and in the future I would like (finances allowing) to go to a 5D mark II but after comparing the 60D with 17-55 and the 5Dc with my neighbours 24-105 I honestly don't know which I prefer. The 5D does seem better at ISO 1600 but I'm not sure if I'd miss 18MP for cropping and the more advanced feel.

I use it for family shots, some events like birthdays etc and I have a HiLite home studio setup.

Any advice to help me make my mind up?

That's sounds logical but I need the money from one of them at the moment. Got a second baby on the way so it's not easy at the moment but I'm hoping on the future I'll be able to afford it.

One thing that concerned me is the amount of vignetting with the 24-105.
 
The 5D2 has a few extra bells and whistles over the 5D but you wont see much of an improvement in image quality or auto focus, its also going to cost you twice as much for those bells and whistles.

Its not just the better ISO performance a 5D provides over crop, its the FF sensor DOF and theres just something about images from a FF that makes them pop.
 
I think you'd find the 60D and the 5D are probably comparable for noise, and the 60D would probably have better focusing and faster shutter rates per second. But.... the sensor on the 5D is just dreamy! I went 400D then 40D (which I still have and use for sport) then 5d and just waiting on delivery of a 5DMkii, and the image quality, the smooth tone of the colours of the full frame is just fantastic.

I think once you use the 5D a few times and get used to the look I think you'll prefer the image quality, and looking at the type of photography you do I think the 5D is best suited.
 
Id say before you make any decision between your 60D and 5D use both cameras in your usual weekend shooting. It would be a better comparison if you used the 24-70 2.8 on the 5D. I agree with Marcus, I can tell the difference quite easily between my previous crop camera shots and the 5D shots.
 
I've never ever noticed it as being of any significance on my 5d2 where the 24-105 is my most used lens, and one click in post processing would sort it anyway.

Out of the 2 you've got, I'd personally suggest the 60d might suit you better on the basis that if you're using a 1.6 crop camera and still cropping pictures, the 5d might not fare so well. But what are you doing with the resulting image? Is it just for screen viewing, or are you actually printing them? You don't need millions of pixels to get a clean image printed at a sensible size, particularly when viewed at a realistic distance on the wall etc.

General viewing on computer and sometimes prints for around the house but only up to 16"x12" region so far. I dot usually crop that much but it's nice to have the option.

The only reason I crop usually is to improve the framing slightly so it's nothing major (most of the time).

I'm definitely going to try them for a week or so. I don't need the money urgently its just I won't be allowed not to sell one of them :)

I agree there is an obvious difference in the images, but they have pros and cons. Sometimes the 60D was resolving more detail but the 5D was giving 'warmer' images, for want of a better word.

I was comparing 60D with f/2.8 and 5D with f/4, both maximums on the lens and the 5D still had an edge on high ISO but less detail in the lower ISOs, slightly.

It's quite good having both to compare I be honest, but I can't keep borrowing the 24-105 really.

I think 2.8 on a crop is about the same as 4 on a full frame. As in, if you frame the picture the same (eg 80mm on FF and 50mm on crop) then the amount of blur should be the same....
 
I've got both and have kept both as they are different beasts! The 60D is much noisier than the 5D in my opinion, but that extra crop factor and resolution is very useful for wildlife. That said, I find myself reaching for the 5D way more than the 60D for most purposes.
