Hello,

I am looking to upgrade from my 400D and have my eye on the 50D. Thing is from the rumors i've heard of the 60D (video etc) it sounds like it's better waiting for that to either buy, or because the 50D will likely drop in price and its better to snap one up then. The video on the 60D does sound interesting I must admit. Does anyone know when it is likely to be released? I know the 500D has been released recently so it might not be for a while.

Is the 50D likely to drop in price a great deal when the 60D arrives? Also what price range would you suggest the 60D will be around?

I thought the 7D was the new 60D

The 7D has a completely different number/ name designation to the XXD series (not to mention price), and production continues alongside the 50D so there's no way the 7D is the 60D.

I'm sure we'll see a 60D in due course but I'm not sure that it will be any time soon. The obvious 'upgrade' would be video, but beyond that, it's difficult to see what they could improve much without affecting sales of the 7D.

If and when the 60D does come, then the price of the 50D will certainly drop, but unless video is really important to you I'd say get the 50D - you can wait for ages for the next new thing or be out taking pictures, and the 50D is a great camera. ;)

Oh maybe, I havn't been keeping up with the times. When was this bad boy released?

The rumour sites say that they've had reports that the xxD line isn't dead so I suppose there might be a 50D replacement at some time especially as the 50D looks a bit under spec against other stuff on the market.

As to when a 60D might come, who knows?

How does the 50D look under spec and against what? It's still occupies a pretty niche spot in the market with 15mp on a crop sensor - only bettered in fact by the 7D and not by that much as far as pixel count goes.

Well, vid for one, weather sealing for another, focus system maybe...check the spec sheets and decide for yourself. Plus it's been out a while now and products in this sector seem to be replaced what? every 12-18 months or so?

I'm not too bothered about a high mp count though, seems to bring as many problems as advantages.

PS. The 50D could also be undermined by newer models in Canons own xxxD range and the cheaper end Nikons too.

Well weather sealing and AF system means you're talking about the 7D which is far more expensive and a different market slot. I have the 7D and the 50D and still wouldn't hesitate to recommend the 50D to anyone. The 50D was launched unusually soon after the 40D - even by todays standards, which is another reaon why I think the 60D might be a while coming. I had a quick play with the video on the 7D when I first got it, but it's doubtful if it will see a lot of future use - it's the other features of the 7D which are important to me.

It entirely depends what you want to shoot as to whether the problems outweigh the advantages. High mp crop sensors still do things other cameras can't which is why the people who need what they offer love them.

That's only true so far, camera size, build quality, shutter count and other features are important to many users in making the buying decision.

CT. You seem very defensive of the 50D. I'm not having a go at you or the 50D. I'm merely reporting what the rumour sites are saying in response to the OP and what they are saying is that they've received reports that the xxD line is not dead. They also state that the 50D is looking a bit older gen now compared to newer stuff both from Canon and other manufacturers.

I only mentioned the rumour sites in response to the OP's question about a possible 60D as in this case rumours seem appropriate. Perhaps you could take a look at the more reliable rumour sites? They are often reasonably accurate and usually make sensible comment.

Is a 60D coming - Yes
It is soon - How long is a piece of string (define soon)
Will the 50D price drop - Yes until the old stock has gone.

Will it be weather sealed - NO NO NO and NO Canon don't weather seal ANY camera, even the 1D is not sealed it's weather resistant, Canon do not meet a specific standard for water resistance from the Japan Industrial Standards committee:

Will a 60D have more megapixels - Well apart from the G cameras Canon still think the mp race is on so yes.
Video - ALL yes I shout that again ALL new dslr from Canon will have video

Is it worth waiting for? IMHO no not at all, a few extra mega over a 50D is not going to make much difference, and that's about all Canon can add not to clash with the 7D I would think they'll add the remote speedlight control too.
