Yes! If you are thinking about it, then you know you want to do it, go for it, you won't regret it either. ;)

Why?

I think I know the answer but I'm considering one of these two at the moment:shrug:

What cant you do with the F4 at present?

Well the 2.8 IS wont be any sharper.. just a stop faster, and probably a tad quicker focusing. Only you know if you've been finding that you need the extra stop. There's a big difference in price, and it's also pretty heavy in comparison. ;)

:agree:

If you don`t need the extra stop of light then I would say save up for a different focal length alltogether, you`ll find the f4 good enough for what you wan`t.

it will mean i can use my kenko 1.4 tc to get 280 f/4 and 2x tc to get 400 5.6
it will be easier than buying canon 100-400

70-200 f2.8 is L is a superb lens, and offers a few small benefits over the f4 version you have. beware though, that it's not all that hot with a 2x tele on it, and the IQ suffers quite a bit. it's definitely not the same as having a 400 f5.6.....

it's fine with a 1.4x on though, and there's not too much IQ degredation with it on.

i wouldn't be without my one. good luck with whatever you choose to do.

if your chossing to sell the f4 let me know. Im on the look out for one at the moment

What body(s) do you have ?

If you have something like a 40D, which isn't too bad at 800 ISO, do you really need F2.8 ? And could you not just add the 100-400 to your kit bag - that way you have a number of options.....

Just an idea.

Much as I dislike the 100-400, putting a 2x on a 70-200/2.8 won't get you anywhere near it in terms of IQ.
I'd guess that keeping the 70-200/4 and using the difference you intend paying will get you close to a reasonable secondhand 300/4 ISL or 400/5.6L.

Just out of interest :) what is it that you don't like about the 100-400

Two things and they're only personal preferences.....(I'm not a fan of zooms generally though).
I only go along with constant aperture, parfocal zooms and push/pull doesn't suit me for moving targets....others prefer push/pull to rotary though.

Sounds great, but if it worked we'd all be dong it. ;) Image quality is well down using the 2XTC, but the lens is usable with the 1.4XTC. Even with the 1.4X TC, you'd need to stop down a stop or two before the lens was a match for the 100-400L

I use a 2x with my sigma 7-200 / f2.8 & it works ...

but only if it's a sunny day
with a contrasty image
that's not moving to fast

& I'm lucky :)

i think i will keep my 70-200 f/4 because it is really sharp and probably go for the 300 f/4 or 400 5.6 when the next canon cashback is in

I have a question about these lenses too. Does the AF work on the F4 with a 1.4x or 2x connected. I know it does on the F2.8.

Choccy...

The 1.4x will still give AF (albeit a little more slowly) but the 2x won't.

Bob is correct when referring to the f4 lens. All Canon XD, XXD , XXXD bodies maintain AF until an effective aperture of f5.6. The pro bodies go higher f8 (?).

f2.8 lens + 1.4xTC => f4 :)
f2.8 lens + 2xTC => f5.6 :)

f4 lens + 1.4xTC = f5.6 :)
f4 lens + 2xTC = f8, :( will only AF on XD pro bodies

Im having the same dilemma.

I use my 70-200F/4 IS constantly with a 1.4x and was even consideing the 100-400 and ditching the converter.
Though im not sure i would need the extra fairly minimal reach and so thought about getting the 2.8.
#It is a bit bigger and heavier, but i feel i would benefit from the extra reach.
Either that or keep the f/4 IS and put the extra cash toward the 50mm 1.4.

As others have said the IQ with the 2.8 + 2xTC is poor. I've got both and dont use the combination together.
I keep debating a 400mm prime (but thats loadsa wonga)

been reading this thread with interest..i also have a 70-200 F/2.8 lens, and although it's a sony one for my alpha body,i was also thinking about a 2X teleconverter for the extra reach, but reading the comments here,i'll think i'll give it a miss....;)

I was always under the impression that the F/4 versions with noticeably sharper that the f/2.8. I wouldn't be willing to swap mine. I'd just pick up a 200mm f/2.8 L prime if I wanted the extra speed. or the 200mm f/1.8 :D

My D80 autofocuses fine and quickly at f/5.6 400mm, using the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 and a 2xTC. I know, however, that it can be a 'hit/miss' thing depending upon the lens combination. I didn't realise that it may be body specific - I'm selling my lens at the moment and will adjust the description first thing in the morning.

Anyway, FWIW, here's one at 400mm f/5.6..

I know everyone is rubbishing the 70-200 2.8 IS and the 2x extender, but I got these to replace my 100-400 (as I needed the 2.8..), I did test them like for like before I sold the 100-400 and IQ was very much similar! The 100-400 did just win in test conditions, but to be honest, out in the field my new combo works just as well and produces identical results!
