Hi all,

I've been using this lens extensively for the last 9 months or so and find it absolutely excellent.

However after about 2 weeks it made a loud sort of whining noise which lasted about 3 presses of the IS actuation (I use back button focusing so I know it wasn't the autofocus) however as there was this strange noise briefly I sent the lens back to Elstree for a check.

They called me, said that they had stripped it down and could find nothing wrong

The same thing happened again about a week ago when I was in S Africa so it will obviously be going back again.

The purpose of this post is to find out if anyone else has had this problem... thanks.

Not had any problems at all with mine George...I dont use back button focus too much though...What mode was you shooting in and what do you have the ai setting set to ?

Hi Tug,

Well I was in Tanzania doing wildlife shots and AI would almost certainly have been in AI Servo mode, however the noise was I'm certain from the IS system...which as you know is normally almost silent!!
Probably on my Mk3 but possibly on my 7D but don't think that should be relevant.

I think I'll insist on a new IS assembly..it ain't a cheap bit of glass!!

Thanks,

George
