I bought a used Canon 70-200L IS F4 a couple of weeks ago and although I didn't notice it at time, the IS seems a bit noisy.
Is this normal as I thought the IS on these lenses was supposed to be silent?
The one I had was quite loud, relatively speaking. Unless it's disturbing your subjects and is working fine I wouldn't worry. I think the volume can vary in different examples of the same lens.
This gets mentioned quite a lot. Mine does it, but it's hardly loud - you can just hear it when it's really quiet. Nice to know it's working - that's what you paid an extra £400 for
It's definitely a lot more noticable than other Canon IS lenses.......I can hardly hear the IS on my 17-55 f/2.8 unless I put my ear right up close to the lens, but the 70-200 f4 IS I can hear just when using the camera. I also thought it was too loud to be normal, but after reading on here it is apparent this is normal on this lens.
Would I sell a dud? Come on now!
In my experience, the larger the lens, the noisier the IS. I once had an 18-55 IS - you couldn't hear a thing. On a larger telephoto that I have, it is very noticeable. This is pure speculation, but I was wondering if the motors that move the glass need to be more powerful to move bigger glass, and hence are louder?
Johnathan I wasn't suggesting you had sold me a dud, the IQ is superb, I just wondered about the noise, that's all.
Coupled with a 1.4x converter the IQ is still excellent at f/5.6.
