The IS version is considerably more money than the basic 70-200m. Is the difference in the IS version significant enough to pay the extra.

I guess what i'm asking is, is the 70-200 USM value for money or fools gold?
 
The IS version of the 70-200F4 provides better results than the non IS. For the extra money you're also getting a sharper lens as well as the IS. Whether that's worth it is upto you though. :)
 
Most reviews said IS and non-IS version are very close as IQ. The question is do you need IS or not and it depends what are you planing to shoot with this lens.
 
John you won't go wrong with either one, they're both sharp lenses and either one will give excellent results.
Yes the IS is very useful and a great feature to have but whether it's worth the extra can only be your decision in the end.
 
IS also has weather proofing gasket at the mounting end, non IS doesnt.

Agree I've got the non IS version and have considered changing it for the IS one but mostly use mine for moving subjects so there would be no benefit for me
My non IS is very sharp
I did read on the Internet that the IS version is not quite as good at the minimum focus distance but don't know if that's accurate but it did put me off getting the IS F4
I do use it quite a bit at close distances

Hi John

I think the question you need to ask is do you think you will make use of the IS?

I had IS on another lens before I bought mine and found it useful enough to know that I wanted it on the 70-200. IF you shoot motorsports all the time, or always have your camera on tripod then you probably won't miss it.

If you shoot hand held in the UK throughout the year then I'd say get saving the pennies :D.

Just remembered THIS Look on the second page at the crop of the horses eye, 1/60 sec hand held with IS at a 35mm equivalent Focal length of 320mm.

I shoot my F4 non IS handheld all the time & i do not miss it,i have had IS lenses in the past so i am more than happy with the non IS.:thumbs:
 
I have the non IS version which is very sharp, not used the IS version to compare though
