Canon 70-200mm L (non is) Going Cheap - Is It Ok For Weddings?

Yes
My mate has offered me his Canon 70-200 L lens for £300.

The glass is clean with no visible dust or marks & the body is very
clean. The only marks are under the tripod collar where the lens has
been rotated.

Other than overall condition, is there anything i should be looking for
other than image quality & would it suitable for candid wedding shots?

I understand that 2.8 is preferable so maybe i should take the Sigma
which is being sold in the classifieds but is £135 more expensive.

Any advice appreciated (y)

Hi, I have the f4 version and it is one of my favourite lens.

I do think you would really need 2.8 for indoor shots in low light. I'm not sure how highly rated the Sigma is but the F4 L is a really sharp lens and at £300 is a very good buy!!

You could also pick up a nifty fifty that would be nice for some indoor shots - would still work out cheaper than buying the 2.8 :)

so this is the f4 version yes?

I think you'd be happy with it, esp at that price (even more so as you know the history / have seen the lens), you could always sell on and upgrade at later date (y)

The pics look sharp enough but im concered about indoor work.

a good buy but not for weddings you need a shorter focal length

Ive just purchased a Sigma 24-60 f2.8. Would that be sufficient for a
smallish church without getting too close to people?
Im tempted just for the saving ££££

I think i would keep it for my equestrian shots but it would be tempting to
move it on :)

I guess it would be a good idea to test the 24-60 in the church & make
my choice afterwards.

If the Sigma will do the job i could get the Canon & spend the saving on
a new flashgun i guess.

My f/4 IS is very sharp! I'm happy with it, but I'm about to upgrade to f/2.8 IS. :)

70-200 is an excellent focal length for weddings. Its one of the two lens I use the most (the other being the 24-70).

I think if you do want this for weddings you need to consider spending the money for a f2.8 rather than an f4.

yeah deffo 2.8
the bokeh on this lens has to be sampled to be believed
ideal for weddings especially when teamed with a 24-70 f2.8

the perfect set up for the bulk of my work
