It's short when zoomed back, but still fat and heavy. IQ okay, but nothing special.
For that kind of money, 70-300L is within reach. Outstanding. Never been a fan of the 70-300 IS though; Tamron 70-300 VC is better, and better value. Or 70-200L 4 IS?
I'd recommend you only look at the DO lens if you really need the compact size, otherwise go with Mike's recommendation of the 70-300mm L. It is a crackingly sharp lens with great IS and AF speed. It's also quite compact considering.
